Re: Glorious Chaos

Just read Colin Hart's book again.
The record Company wanted the Manchester show recorded, but Ritchie wanted the Birmingham show recorded.
This was decided before the tour.
Even where the cameras would be and how many was discussed and agreed. Including the cameras on stage.

Wow!

Did Hart say they had a British show to select, not any show of the entire tour?

Since you just read it, was there anything of the Gillan calling Payne names thing?

I got out the book and read these bits.

The !@#$ comment was made by Gillan in a press conference (i.e. in public) and it was about the touring schedule. Gillan did one European tour and was sacked after it. Hart implies - by saying with that comment Gillan had "signed his own death warrant" - that was the last straw, Gillan's comment.

The Birmingham part read somewhat differently to me as it did to you. The record company said they want to do Manchester. The rest of the band's opinion is not given, but Blackmore said if anywhere (as above, it was to be UK, so Germany etc were out), it should be Birmingham. Here's the part you didn't notice. Hart writes: "His [Blackmore's] reasons were solid. [Manchester Apollo was] "Too small for all the cameras and we would have fans sightlines blocked by platforms etc. and so it was agreed that it would be re-arranged to do it at the NEC".

As you wrote, Blackmore okayed the plans for Birmingham, inc. the number of cameras. The plan was explained to him by Hart.

Then the narrative follows as we usually see it: Blackmore walks behind his amps, turns around and tells the camera must go. He is not happy with the second position of it either, and when eventually appears on stage, does the usual water routine.

The show goes on, "but no encore". I'm not sure if this is true. On the tour, they always finished with SOTW. The running order was the same up and including the Paint It Black medley. Then it was Hush, Speed King, or both. At NEC, they played Hush. But maybe Hart does not remember this as it was left of the CHOHW video (I'd hazard a guess it was because of the vocal performance, but that is irrelevant).

Hart concludes the story like this: "Ritchie left the arena later, pointing his finger at me, he growled, "this is all your fault, Colin". Well, wasn't it always."

As it was Hart who showed him the plans of the filming, it is hard to tell if that "your fault" was a reference to their meeting (at Blackmore's house, with Blackmore in his pyjamas if we must know) before the tour, or that the camera was not moved fast enough, difficult to tell.

One thing seems plausible though: after Blackmore decided he didn't like the camera on stage, "he was looking for trouble now".

Nice points Rezi. Who knows what goes through Ritchie's mind.

According to Colin the whole band agreed to record the Birmingham show to be released at a later date.
It's not clear when the decision to record a show was made (before or during the tour).
