A couple of comments. Digging the rehearsal take of Do You Close Your Eyes, which is like a lounge version. This is the Daisley-Stone line-up. It is very mellow and soft, as there is no guitar. Dio half-speaks the lyrics, and you get to hear Daisley's bass and vocals very well, as well as Stone's keys. The same goes for Still I'm Sad from the same Bob Daisley rehearsal tape. Very interesting. Now Blackmore is present, too. Although the 1975-76 shows are by far my favourites live stuff from Rainbow, the next line-up was almost as good. This set includes a devastating 20+ minute live version of Catch the Rainbow from January 1978. The gig is considered as a classic by diehards. The recording is probably from Cozy's collection, and is of quite rough soundboard quality, distorted and with overload. Here it is, regarless, possible to hear Daisley's bass work, which is very good.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rezi)Wed, 22 Apr 2015 12:04:42 +0000 Re: New Rainbow box sethttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486995,from=rss#post486995https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486995,from=rss#post486995quote:The Fault Line wrote: Oh I have to say the Down to Earth Deluxe is well worth it. Just listened to 1981-2, and the Hammersmith live tracks are of very good quality. Great to hear Airey's live work there, too. I realised this box set duplicates only two essential Rainbow songs: Stargazer and Power. I don't mind, I've always liked Power a lot. They did two there, 13. and 14. Sept. Both were recorded I think? Of course Roy is our expert here, he can probably tell us more of the recordings and broadcasts. I have a CD-R titled "Captured Live", Cardiff 14th Sept 1983. I have it on right now. Not sure I'm an expert Rezi, just an avid fan!! The Cardiff shows were 14th and 15th September 1983. I assumed for some years the RKO 'Captured Live' radio show was the 14th, but listening again recently prior to 'Can't Happen Here' Turner mentions its 'Battle of Britain Day' (which is actually on 15th September) and then remarked 'it's the second night' before introducing 'Fool For The Night'. Most Cardiff bootlegs are direct radio broadcast lifts in which the set-list sequence may have been rearranged or edited (i.e. 'Fire Dance' was dropped from the radio transmission) when aired which further complicates matters as to the origin. quote:Roy, it is definitely the same version of LLRR. On the box set, again, the sound is better though, tighter, clearer - more effort put in the mastering, perhaps? On the box set it says the rehearsals were held in Pirate Sound - do you know if it is the same building (i.e. Pirate Sound perhaps being in the old Shepperton Studios building)? Nope- Pirate Sound is in LA while the Shepperton sound stages are part of the Pinewood Studios in Surrey, UK- still being used by bands to this day. I think Ritchie worked up the two new band members in LA during August 1977, then did full pre-production rehearsals for the European tour at Shepperton in september. That's where Bob's tapes come from IMHO nondisclosed_email@example.com (harryurz)Fri, 30 Jan 2015 10:49:03 +0000 Re: New Rainbow box sethttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486955,from=rss#post486955https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486955,from=rss#post486955RBB, thanks - I listened to Stargazer (dreadful version, the effect of the ladies singing the riff is not right, it's as if this was a musical!), and sure enough, the same track has Stranded to it. Stranded has bits on the box set that are not on the CL version - JLT's yells in the intro, he sings a line or two different. Some of Blackmore's guitar bits missing on CL, and the solo is obviously different. So they must have recorded both shows, as the booklet essay states. They did overdubs for the CLYG single's B-sides of ANL and Stranded (released on the Anthology some years back). According to the booklet, it were these particular versions used for that single, but are in their plain form here. Power features a long intro on the box set, and is clearly a different version to CL boot. Now that I got to listen to these back to back, the sound on the box set is superior. As I wrote above, Cardiff tracks have a better sound than the Tokyo tracks. I didn't realise to take Finyl Vinyl with me to compare the sound of the versions of that classic version of DTC. DH, in AT in the beginning there is is about ten second bit in which RB tests his guitar - and Glover is trying to find the desired delay effect for the tambourine which very prominent in this "Polar Mix". Also, the tune starts with a bar of so of kick drum beat, and then the instruments are mixed in. Otherwise, it's very similar to the album version. This Polar Mix is a curiosity really. As for DWTD, it sounds very much like the album version, but the guitar solo is indeed different. I can see why they chose the version on the album, it flows better. I don't know if they only replaced the verse bit, the bridge part is the same, or at least very similar to the released version. The guitar sound is rougher on this as well, without the usual polishing. I compared the box set and BOOS remaster versions of Make Your Move to compare sound quality, and the sound is notably clearer, tighter on the box set. Bass especially, but overall sound, too - a dust-up feel, if you know what I mean. Roy, it is definitely the same version of LLRR. On the box set, again, the sound is better though, tighter, clearer - more effort put in the mastering, perhaps? On the box set it says the rehearsals were held in Pirate Sound - do you know if it is the same building (i.e. Pirate Sound perhaps being in the old Shepperton Studios building)?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rezi)Fri, 30 Jan 2015 08:41:45 +0000 Re: New Rainbow box sethttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486954,from=rss#post486954https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486954,from=rss#post486954I have Captured Live which I downloaded from pirate bay, but the cd I have starts from Catch The Rainbow and ends with Long Live Rock N Roll. I'm sorry, you will have to wait til tomorrow, as I forgot the set in the office. I will post more info tomorrow. A few comments: RBB, what Cardiff set do you have? They did two there, 13. and 14. Sept. Both were recorded I think? Of course Roy is our expert here, he can probably tell us more of the recordings and broadcasts. I have a CD-R titled "Captured Live", Cardiff 14th Sept 1983. I have it on right now. It does not contain either Firedance or Stranded. The recording is excellent radio recording, like you said. Quite why they did they did not use FFTN from this show but Tokyo I have no idea. The Cardiff version is vastly superior as a performance and a rercoding. JLT is actually superb in this show. Can't say with just one listen if Power is the same version as on CL. The printout of the CD-R lists Stranded, but it's not on the disc! I don't know if the sound is better on the box set as I can't do a straight comparison. Maybe they've removed hiss, but not up to the point they did on the rehearsal take of Stargazer on Rising deluxe, leaving it sound thin and distant. I hope we will get a full recording of this at some point. It's a storming show, JLT era at its best. Love how the keys are strong in the mix. DH, I will have to check them more carefully tomorrow, but my hunch is AT is just a different mix, but DWTD might actually have an alternative guitar solo. I packed the BOOS CD to go with me to the office tomorrow. Roy, I'm quite sure it is the same, packed the LLRR DE with me, though! The track listing is, for some reason, quite unspecific in some cases, but closer info is given in the booklet. E.g. the 1976 live tracks are listed as Live in Osaka, but inside they give the date, 9th Dec. This is correct, the info got mixed on the OS deluxe edition which claims the extra tracks are from Osaka (the band played three shows there, 5th, 8th and 9th Dec). They are actually from the very last show of that line-up, the evening show of 16th Dec in Tokyo.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rezi)Thu, 29 Jan 2015 20:21:17 +0000 Re: New Rainbow box sethttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486948,from=rss#post486948https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486948,from=rss#post486948Rezi- I'd be interested to know if the 'Long Live Rock N Roll' (marked "L.A. rehearsals 1977") is the same Shepperton take featured on the deluxe 'LLRnR' release, as they both clock in at 6-56m long!nondisclosed_email@example.com (harryurz)Thu, 29 Jan 2015 15:58:28 +0000 Re: New Rainbow box sethttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486947,from=rss#post486947https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486947,from=rss#post486947thanks for this, the one I was interested in was the alternative take of Anyone there? it is just a different mix? ditto Drinking with the devil...?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Desperateheart)Thu, 29 Jan 2015 14:17:38 +0000 Re: New Rainbow box sethttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486946,from=rss#post486946https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p486946,from=rss#post486946Thank you! I don't care for the sleeve picture - too Yngwie - but otherwise the set looks great, love the CD slipcases. Every item inside in wrap, am driving so haven't opened the hardcover booklet yet. Inside is a repro of Donington poster, too, didn't fold it completely open. Listened to CD1, sound excellent though you still have to turn it up on the first album tracks to hear Gruber's work. It pays off as he was by far the finest bassist Rainbow had. The previously unreleased live tracks from Osaka third show in 1976 are clearly of weaker sound quality and mix than the bonus tracks on OS reissue. I reckon they are from Cozy's tape collection, not proper master tapes. Music contained is superb. The other CD I listened to was #4, I.e. 1983-4. The Cardiff 1983 are smashing, even if Power is chaotic thanks to Blackmore probably jumping around with his guitar volume full open. Stranded is excellent, the backing singers really make it alive. A revelation is the live Firedance, this is a proto version of power metal. JLT kills on it, as does Rosenthal's panned synth solo. The Tokyo 1984 recordings are of weaker quality but listenable. At the end, a true shock track: SOTW from that very last Rainbow show. JLT sings it acapella and puts a brilliant Southern slant to it. Burgi puts in a primitive drum pattern. The magic is broken when the band joins in with full whack. Blackmore plays an unusual type slide solo which matches JLT's opening but is now lost in the noise. Still, it's the best SOTW I have heard in a quarter of a century. There is also a repro of SBTE tour book (I believe - I don't have an original). The harcover booklet, with an essay by Andy Francis, is nice. Lots of pictures, but clearly they have heavily utilised tour books and magazine articles. If you have the Deluexe Editions of Rising, LLRR and DTE, you have a good chunk of these already. I don't mind it. The essay focuses on telling the basic history, again I think Francis has used his Deluxe Edition texts as the basis. The booklet is a nice addition and companion to the music. Haven't peeked at the DVD yet.
