I may have to make a Gillan playlist based on that! nondisclosed_email@example.com (RatBatBlu)Tue, 09 Sep 2014 13:37:15 +0000 Mick Underwood’s Glory Road, Sunbury Music Club, Middlesex. Being Mick’s birthday there was a lot of good will in the air from the start and a great atmosphere as the band kicked off around 9pm with a frenetic Unchain your brain. The set was all the Gillan classics you’d expect with no drop in energy level or pointless solos spots you might see elsewhere. in addition a 2 Quatermass tunes were played, Black Sheep of the family and one I hadn’t heard before called the River. Over the last 20/30 years so many rock classics have become overexposed, with live renditions deteriorating to unacceptable levels, (at extortionate ticket prices nonetheless!) the current Whitesnake comes to mind! So its wonderful to hear these amazingly musical, progressive rock tunes played by top notch players in a decent venue for a reasonable tariff. The guys threw in some true additional surprises in the form of Living a lie, If I sing softly, Bluesy blue sea and She tears me down. The first two I believe never having been played live before. After a storming Mr Universe and New Orleans closed the main set the guys encored with Lucille played in true break neck Gillan band tradition! I can’t stress how much fun the guys have on stage, particular mention to Luka both an amazing singer and an engaging front man. When the PA broke down during the 2nd set he didn’t miss a beat, entertaining and involving the crowd with a medley of Beatles chorus’s. I’d also recommend Jeff Summers on lead guitar who combines feel, chops and passion. I hope Mick had a good birthday, and look forward to more MUGR dates though with the nature of the music business these days, transport costs etc I understand this is not as easy to organise as it might appear.
