Oh, no, not another one!

Well, I've gone and done it again! Another new guitar. Well, its around 15 / 16 years old, but you know what I mean. It's a Guild X170T in Tennessee Orange, absolutely gorgeous looking 'thang'! Bit more in keeping with the 'rural rock' thing the band's doing at the moment. Don't tell the missus!

I love Guild guitars, they're so well made (have a Guild 12 string that's built like a tank with two truss rods! Not the tank, the guitar). Some might say that they're every bit as good as Gibsons, at half the price. I tend to agree.

Those Guilds ARE nice! Short of owning an original Gretsch, I think those Guilds are nicer than the current Gretsch reissues!

Yep, seen that one....funny, isn't it! I'm merely 'economical with the truth'. I can't hide the guitars but I can and do 'forget' exactly how much they cost! Mind you, in this wonderful age of technology, I dare say she could found out simply by looking on ebay!

Ebay, to some extent, has ruined the chances of ever picking up a bargain nowadays. It's quite simple to find out what the going rate is and the missus would know exactly how much is coming her way in the event of the inevitable divorce caused by Gear Aquisition Syndrome (GAS).

Yeah, the days are long gone where you could wander into a pawn shop and find a great instrument for an even greater price due to eBay; its become way too easy to research things. I have been fortunate in that I've found some nice pieces at yard sales that I was able to flip pretty easily though.

I was recently on the look out for a studio pro-standard condenser mic and I saw a brand new Rode Classic ll anniversary edition going for £875 on ebay. I checked the going rate on Thomann etc etc and they are over £1,300. I thought, well, even if it's crap (which it wont be) I could sell it back on ebay for at least £1,100 'unopened', but I couldn't bring myself to press the buy button. Next time I looked it had been snapped up. But that's a rare occurence these days. I bought a Rode K2 (valve condenser, lovely mic).

That Guild cost me $1,400. I saw adverts from 2009/10 when they were $900. I think Guilds are becoming quite a collectors' 'thing' now, so instead of trying to find those rare bargains, I suppose the game now is to try to spot what the future 'must-haves' will be. There are similar X170T's on line for over $1,750 (late 1990s)! Have you seen the price of vintage AKG and Neumann mics!? Unbelievable!

Oh I know, Neumann's and AKG's bring crazy $$! I think the difference in Guild pricing is BF/AF; Before Fender and After Fender. But Fender only recently sold Guild off, so that's why those 90s Guilds (BF) are bringing a premium. Personally, I think its a lot of bunk though; a good guitar is a good guitar. Kind of like those people who turn their noses up at Norlin-era Gibson's or CBS Fender's. I have a CBS-era strat ('73) and I love it. Took me a while to find it, but I've played some pre-CBS strats that weren't all that either. Same with the Norlin Gibson's; sure there were some bad ones, but there were some great ones too. Just have to play a bunch until you find the right one for you.
