Bands with the big one
This was inspired by another topic in which the idea of DP playing SOTW as the first song in concert popped up.
So, which bands have that one big song the majority of an audience if not has come to hear but at least expect to be played? And in general, consider to be the defining track?
These come to mind:
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Satisfaction - the Rolling Stones
Hotel California - the Eagles

Re: Bands with the big one
I would have said Another Brick in The Wall by far over Comfortably Numb for Pink Floyd. Of course, I prefer CN, but as far as global awareness is concerned, there's no discussion I believe.
Europe - The Final Countdown
Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back in Town
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama

Well, that was my point: bands for which you really can't argue about the biggest track. And that is a cue to start arguing, right!
I think Ace of Spades off your list (I don't think Macca has one, just like Rainbow doesn't have one. WS? I suppose it might be HIGA, but it's not clear), and also agree with Apolllo's choiches.

Re: Bands with the big one
For Whitesnake I think it comes down to HIGA or SotN...
McCartney could come down to Maybe I'm Amazed or BotR...
Fans expect to hear those songs and in the rare instance when they're not played, the evening feels 'incomplete'.

For McCartney I'd say Let if BE or The long and Winding Road.

Yeah, it must be a Beatles song, right?

Re: Bands with the big one
If we're going with a Macca Beatles song then I would say its Hey Jude...every time I've seen him the crowd was almost as loud as the band, more so than with Let It Be or Long And Winding Road.

Hey Jude, that's the one I had in mind.
