Factory printed boots

I have a question:
in recent years it got so easy to find recordings/artworks on the web, but I kind of miss the old properly printed boots. At record fayres it's getting harder every time, so I'm thinking, do you guys can suggest me a good web site (japanese, maybe?) where it's still possible to find the Bondage or Darker than blue boots, for example?

I was also thinking (maybe it's illegal, I don't know) but wouldn't it be nice if we fans could privetly finance between ourselves small quantities of factory printed boots/artworks? Do you think it's possible?
Thanks.

I don't know what the laws of Europe are, but over here for a while, record shows were getting raided by the Feds. I haven't been to a record show in a while mainly because there aren't any put on around me, but all the raids got me to stop going as obtaining boots was my primary reason for going anyway.

I can see both sides of it; bands may have had a crappy gig and don't want something of bad quality (playing and sound) out there, but at the same time, most people who buy bootlegs already have bought all of the official releases anyway and wish to seek out more, to which case the loss of revenue argument is kind of moot.

Myself, I'm on the fence about paying for bootlegs; if its of amazing quality (sound and packaging) and its of extreme historical significance and something I'd been seeking for a while, I won't have a problem paying for it.

Re: Factory printed boots

That's truly an intriguing idea, Fdr, but without wanting to be a party pooper, I can't see it happening. I hope there would be a way, once again, to have some of the best tapes being released officially. Purple Records seem to have closed down their Sonic Zoom seres, for example.

It's my impression it is quite costly to properly transfer analog tapes to digital format. That might have been one reason they didn't release all the recorded gigs of Rainbow's Rising tour (at least one full gig still in the vaults) and TBRO tour (likewise) some years back. They must have thought it's not commercially viable enough.

I'm NOT encouraging anyone to buy bootlegs, but I keep an eye on various aspects of DP & family history, and I have seen DP & family bootlegs being sold at eBay. Prices ranging between a few USD and 120 USD. Most are between 20 and 50 dollars, and obviously most of the sellers are general music / record collectors. Bidders are far and few.

There are also many easy-to-find, no registering needed, sites where you can download lossless (or if you fancy, lossy) copies of classic bootlegs. That's a good way to hear if you are interested in hearing any more.

The stance of the authorities has not changed, and indeed bootlegs are defined as pirate goods here in Finland. As a rock anorak I would disagree but I can see it is easier to just label all unauthorised stuff as pirate. I don't believe officials have time nowdays to look for bootleg CDs, let alone LPs. They're utterly trivial these days of internet download.

There was a big record shop raid here in my hometown maybe ten years back. I think it's dead certain someone - competitor, angry customer... - gave the officials a tip. The guy was selling bootlegs since the mid-1980s, and he was the only shop to have them on display. Prices were really high, but apparently he did an okay business. His prices were ridiculously high with normal stuff, too. That's why I didn't shop there since the late 1980s. He was a metal specialist, so he had a clientele right til the end. His defence in court was he didn't know the products were illegal. Well, he always had boots in a separate shelf, with a sign "specials" on it (I remember the sign!), He was asked in court, if he didn't know, then why were they in a separate shelf and were much more expensive than the other stuff. He said something like they were expensive to buy in, surely he must make a profit!

Well, he lost the case, the shop closed down and he needed to pay the likes of Springsteen and Madonna a lot of money, thousands of Euros each. I can't remember which other artists were mentioned. I'm sure the ones to receive compensation never noticed that in their bank flow though! emoticon

Madonna bootlegs? Really? emoticon emoticon

But yeah, I've seen the boots on eBay and I admit I've been tempted a few times, but in the end, you never truly know who you're buying from...I'd love to have those first 4 U.S. Rainbow shows on cd though.

These days it's almost impossible to tell what is official and what is not. For example, if I buy an official download file and want to burn it into a cd, is it illegal to pay to have it on a properly printed article? I'd say it isn't. In Italy you have to pay a tax for a sticker on the disc but if it's done privetly, without people profiting from it, the situation is not so clear. I can see a group of, say, 10 people financing a small quantity of Rainbow/Purple/Whitesnake soundboard titles not to sell them but just for private pleasure. Do you guys think I'm too naive?

The only drawback to that is you have to trust those ten people will never sell the product you're creating, because the second they do...the passion project becomes a criminal enterprise.

I don't know the answers to your good questions, Fdr. Do you have an idea what real - factory pressed - CDs cost? I would imagine it's not cheap.

I don't know but it can't be that expensive these days. Until a few years ago you had to print at least 400/500 copies but in these last few years I heard also of companies printing whatever number of copies. I'll have a look around and I'll get back to you.

If you click on an album you can read if a disk is factory pressed or a CDR or DVDR.
