Re: My personal album chart
I know you were expecting Chicago to follow Chain, but we interrupt your regular charts because I'm seeing Jon Anderson live next weekend. So:
Jon Anderson Olias of Sunhillow (1976)
1 Ocean Song ***
2 Meeting (Garden of Geda)/Sound out the Galleon ****
3 Dance of the Ranyart/Olias (To Build the Moorglade) ***
4 Qoquaq Ën Transic/Naon/Transix Tö ***
5 Flight of the Moorglade ***
6 Solid Space ***
7 Moon Ra/Chords/Song of Search ***
8 To the Runner ***
Album score: 53.1
Jon Anderson has the most beautiful voice in the universe. Drops a few stars due to the over-abundance of new-agey synths.
--- "Music, shorn of labels and standing alone, when it is conceived, composed and performed with love and integrity, can elevate us all."

Re: My personal album chart
And because I'm also seeing Rachel Newton this weekend:
Rachel Newton - The Shadow Side (2012)
1 Lady Diamond ****
2 Rung 2 ****
3 Green Willow ***
4 'S Toigh Leam Cruinneag Dhonn Nam Bo ****
5 The Discoboat ****
6 I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry ****
7 The Last Minute/the Groupie/Height of Rudeness ****
8 Must I be Bound ***
9 The Shadow Side ***
10 Soundboards and Sockets *****
11 Am Bruadar Ud a Chunnaic Mi ***
Album score: 68.2
Beautiful vocals and insanely complex multi-tracked harps. This is why Rachel Newton is my favourite "new" musician. But loses a star because it doesn't have the full 10 minute version version of Soundboards and Sockets.

Re: My personal album chart
Odin Dragonfly - Offerings (2007)
1 Web ****
2 Given Time *****
3 How I Feel Today ****
4 Magpie ****
5 Yellow Time *****
6 This Game ****
7 Round & Round ****
8 Witches Promise *****
9 Waiting For The Snow *****
10 Magnolia Half Moon *****
11 Caught In A Fold *****
12 Forsaken Love *****
Album rating: 89.6
Flute, guitar piano, and a perfect vocal partnership. That's all you need to know.
And so this album enters the chart at #2, just a few percentage points behind Rainbow's Live in Germany. Yes, this album is *that* good.
Yes, I know what you're thinking. I'm not scoring fairly because these are my two favourite musicians and I want them to top the chart. Believe me, I wrestled with that for quite a while before committing the scores to paper.
But then I thought, if they didn't record five-star songs, they wouldn't *be* my
favourite musicians. So I stand by the scores. This is how I feel about these songs and it's why this is an album I can come back to again and again and play and love no matter what my mood.

Re: My personal album chart
Pink Floyd - In London 1966 * 1967
1 Interstellar Overdrive (Full Length Version) **
2 Nick's Boogie **
Album score: 25.0
I like a 20-minute instrumental jam as much as the next guy, but only when they make
musical sense. These two tracks are too unfocused. I admire the inventiveness, but
it's not music I reach for often.

Re: My personal album chart
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
1 Astronomy Domine ****
2 Lucifer Sam ****
3 Matilda Mother ****
4 Flaming ****
5 Pow R. Toc H. ****
6 Take up Thy Stethescope and Walk ****
7 Interstellar Overdrive ****
8 The Gnome ****
9 Chapter 24 ****
10 Scarecrow ****
11 Bike ****
Album score: 75.0
It's got the late-60s organ-driven pop sound that I love and Syd Barrett's uniquely eccentric vision. I always said this was my favourite Pink Floyd album but I wonder if that will hold up under analysis, when I haven't given it any 5-star songs (and later Floyd albums will have a few). It's in the top 10 now, but will it stay there?

Re: My personal album chart
My favorite PF albums aren't necessarily the "popular" ones; everyone mentions DSotM, WYWH and The Wall which are great but Atom Heart Mother, Meddle and especially Animals are my Top 3.

Re: My personal album chart
Interesting that you both put Animals in your top 3. I don't think it would make my top 5 (or 10!).
But it's a while before I get there. First:
Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets
1 Let There Be More Light ****
2 Remember a Day ***
3 Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun ***
4 Corporal Clegg ****
5 A Saucerful of Secrets ***
6 See-Saw ***
7 Jugband Blues ****
Album score: 59.4
An odd album, this. They've lost the brilliance of Syd Barrett, but haven't yet worked out to make best use of what they have without him (i.e. Gilmour's God-like talent). So the album's patchy and a bit unsatisfying.
