Re: My personal album chart

I saw Ted Poley (the Bone Machine singer) at a festival about 13 years ago and enjoyed his set; even though the music is pretty ordinary he has a charismatic stage presence. The merchandise stand had the Bone Machine CD for a fiver, which seemed like a bargain at the time.

Example of their music:

This is actually quite a nice song. I would have given this version another star, but they don't play it this well on the live album.

Blue Öyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin (1981)

1 Fire of Unknown Origin **
2 Burnin' for You **
3 Veteran of the Psychic Wars ****
4 Sole Survivor **
5 Heavy Metal: The Black and Silver **
6 Vengeance (The Pact) **
7 After Dark **
8 Joan Crawford ****
9 Don't Turn Your Back **

Album score 36.1%

BÖC are ok but have never really clicked with me, apart from a few odd tracks. This is the only album of theirs that I own.

Boston - Boston (1976)

1 More than a Feeling ****
2 Peace of Mind ****
3 Foreplay/Long Time ****
4 Rock & Roll Band ***
5 Smokin' ****
6 Hitch a Ride ****
7 Something About You ***
8 Let Me Take You Home Tonight ****

Album score: 68.8%

The album that defined a genre. Many bands jumped on Boston's coat-tails but none of them had the sublime guitar tone and multi-layered vocal harmonies that make this the highest-ranking American band in my chart. (I suspect it will hold on to that accolade until I reach Journey's Escape).

An interesting side effect of this exercise is that it's reminding me what albums I should have but don't. For some reason I never replaced my vinyl of Don't Look Back and Third Stage. I shall rectify that omission asap emoticon (From memory, I think Don't Look Back will rate a little lower and Third Stage a little higher than the debut.)

Iain Jennings - Breathing Space (2005)

1 Forgive Or Surrender ***
2 I've Been Thinking ****
3 Shades of Grey ***
4 No Promises ****
5 Man Made Circles ***
6 Wasted All The Time ***
7 Belief *****
8 You Still Linger ****
9 Escape ***

Album score: 63.9%

I can't point to any specific things that make this album rate so highly, there's just something about Iain Jennings songwriting that I like. It hasn't cracked my top 10, but it's a respectable score.

Belief is the prime example: in any one else's hands a song in this style would have rated two or three stars from me, but Iain takes the formula and makes it something special.

Breathing Space - Coming Up For Air (2007)

1 Coming Up For Air ****
2 When I Hold On To You ****
3 On The Blue Horizon ***
4 Time Tells All The Unknown ****
5 Rain Song ***
6 The Senses ***
7 Don't Turn A Blind Eye ****
8 Head Above The Water **
9 Searching For My Shadow ****
10 Turn Of The Tide ****

Album score: 62.5%

The follow-up to the Iain Jennings solo album and basically more of the same, he's found a style and he's going to stick to it. I'm not complaining emoticon

Breathing Space - Below The Radar (2009)

1 Below The Radar ***
2 Clear ***
3 Lantern For A Smile ****
4 The Night Takes You Home ***
5 Run From Yourself ****
6 Dusk ***
7 Behind Closed Doors ***
8 Drowning ***
9 Questioning Eyes *****

Album score: 61.1%

Third and final album from Breathing Space. Again, there's not a bad song on here, but I think the inspiration was slowly wearing off and maybe it was the right time for the band to call it a day.

Personally I'd rate The Saxophone Song much higher. One of my favourite KT songs.

Re: My personal album chart

I have a thing about saxophones, don't like the sound at all. But you're right, it's a beautiful song and it's been in my head all week. I think the low score was just blind prejudice. I may reconsider...

Stan Bush - Heaven (1998)

1 Hard to Find an Easy Way ***
2 Cross that Line **
3 Didn't I ***
4 Joanna ***
5 Beginner's Luck ***
6 Heaven **
7 Promises **
8 Dreamin' **
9 Love Don’t Come Easy ***
10 My Father's Son ***

Album score: 40.0

Unpretentious melodic rock from the Bryan Adams school (complete with obligatory syrupy ballad). There's nothing outstanding here, but it's very... pleasant.
