Morse V Eddie Van Halen

There's been a Blackmore V Page thread. Here are two guitarists that rose to prominence at roughly the same time. I was prompted to put this thread up after listening to the best of Van Halen yesterday. I find his playing at times very melodic and at others just plain flashy. He is undoubtedly one of the most influential musicians of our time and his solos in things like Secrets are awesome. However, I'd still pick Morse ahead of him - but not by much.

I think you'll find Morse is way older in the scene than Van Halen. As to who I prefer... I like Eddie's playing a lot but he wouldn't fit at all in Purple so...

Good point emoticon

Eddie is very talented, so we cant take that away from him.

And of course more people know Van Halen than Morse, so he's got that.

Again, as Gillan stated, its not the olympics...

All though I have no giant, major complaints regarding Morse as Purple's guitarist, I'dve loved to have had the chance to hear Ed Van Halen as Purple's guitarist. Either way back in '75 when Blackmore departed the first time, or in late '94 when the search was sadly on because Satriani couldn't - or wasn't allowed to - accept the job on a permanent basis.
Regarding whether he would've been a good fit or not - we'll never know for sure.

Could have been a good idea in 1975, he definitely had way better chops than Bolin. I don't think it could work at all after that, you have to remember that the guy had his own band (with an enormous amount of success) for a number of years, that tends to set a man in specific ways, both musical and behavioural, which cannot be easily broken. I don't think he'd be too interested in being a hired hand for Purple, playing mostly somebody else's songs. The same goes for people like Malmsteen as well.

Hodge? Steve vs. Edward Van Halen? That is like asking is Justin Timberlake a better vocalist than Caruso? Van Halen has the better sound, more charisma, and is just brilliant. Nothing against Steve all he has over Eddie is good looks and all that Timberlake had over Caruso was Britney Spears.

Steve makes me fall asleep after listening to him too much...but EVH makes me want to claw out my eyes and rip the flesh off my face after roughly the same time. emoticon

I remember that someone from the old forum says that Steve Morse is like Edward Van Halen.
