Re: CalJam question....
The version with the comic like scenes is probably some
videographer's version by using video effect's,cause I can't find a version on the market of that.
I've only seen it on HM Pioneers, there are all kind's of way's to do these type of effect's if you have the right equipment.
I've seen the video on vhs going for as much as $89.99
beware of this expensive rip off.
I wouldn't pay that much for it in a million year's,
but then again I can remember watching it when it was on
late night tv in the states back in 74,I was pretty young but it was one of my best childhood memories of them.
In 74 I was only 11 years old.
But my family were totally into rock music and it was a constant factor growing up.
I have a couple of version's of Cal Jam on film but
I prefere the memoriy of it.
I will buy the remastered dvd when it comes out,
but I hope it has the footage the tv version showed of them arriving late and coming down the stairs of the
Starship airplane and also the helicopter taking off after they fled the stage......classic.

I was 13 when it aired on ABC telly. They put the Batman type effects in there for the televised version when it re-ran on In Concert. Very much looking forward to the DVD.
I remember watching it for the first time and not realizing that Gillan and Glover were no longer with the band. I couldn't figure out who the new geezers were, but went out and bought BURN straight away. The night the Cal Jam aired was also the night I went from a Jon Lord and Ian Gillan freak to a Ritchie Blackmore fanatic. I haven't looked back since.

Re: CalJam question....
I'd never seen the Batman effects until got HMP and thoughts they had done that effect especially for that video. I still have the BBC Rock Flashbacks version which I picked up for just £7.99 around 10 years ago. I know a bargain when I see it.

I don't remember the Batman effects on the original telecast, but were added a month later on the re-run of it on ABC's In Concert series.

Re: CalJam question....
I think they were in the original broadcast, Brian. But we'll probably never know for sure...

Re: CalJam question....
I seem to remember Purple doing (what at the time) I thought was their whole set - in other words, everything on the releases with the exception of "Lay Down, Stay Down". But it's been 30 years now, so I could be mistaken, though I'm reasonably sure I've got it right.

Right. The In Concert program was heavily edited and only three songs from each band were aired. I seem to remember ST edited and cut right to the camera demolition after the chorus without all of GH's whoop whoops.

BTW Nighthawk, did the BBC edited the whole Space Truckin'?
Space Trucking is on the 'original' BBC VHS version (1981) - the camera incident isn't though - must have been edited with cutaway shots to the audience or something. So, start saving for the dvd do I?
