Painted Horse -your impressions

I have been going back and listning to some of the outtakes to see if I have missed anything and I have to tell you it was fun listning to this song again. I don't know what I enjoy more the guitar solo or the way Ian sings on this track. I know Blackmore hated this track and the band abandoned this jem. For me it is a fun song to listen to.It really does not sound like Blackmore was not enjoying himself, quite the opposite. The lyrics are quite Gillanesque and I have been trying to decifer the meaning. Any help?

Child on a painted horse
Streams that will run their course
Gone to a far away shore
Ooh, ooh, ah
My painted horse is weeping

Days of another kind
Frost gets a bruising vine
Why did the carpenter die
Ooh, ooh, ah
My painted horse is weeping

Sweet as a rose so fine
 Peaceful as a final time
How old could the lion man cry
 Ooh, ooh, ah
 My painted horse is weeping

Thoughts of a winter moon
 Warm in a distant room
Why did i fall asleep so soon
 Ooh, ooh, ah
 My painted horse is weeping

I love that track. Not because of the lyrics (they don't interest me), but because of the music. Ian's singing, Ritchie's guitar work, Ian's drum fills - everything. I don't know why Blackmore hated it. In Chris Charlesworth's Illustrated Biography I've read that Ritchie, Roger and Ian Paice didn't like the vocals - so perhaps it wasn't just Blackmore's decision not to put it on the album.

I too love Painted Horse.

The lyrics have a fairy tale, or Wizard of Oz feel to them. Child memories / dreams.

I've never rated Painted Horse too highly, but have been giving all the Mk2 original albums a listen lately and PH has gone up in my estimation. In fact it's one of the best songs from the WDWTWA sessions. The vocals sound very like the dual harmonies from Cream to me. Maybe this was why some of the band shied away from releasing it?

Great guitar solo too!
