Record Shops Around the World
The idea for this topic came to me years ago when strolling around Rome and attempting to spot a record shop (I like Italian prog a lot). I found a couple, but no doubt missed many others. The idea cam back to me when I again was in Rome in late May / early June.
So, the idea is to post information on record shops in cities and towns you either live or have visited. So when posters travel and as music fans are willing to visit shops, they can check here for tips. I'll start with Rome and Perugia, Italy. Will do some other cities later on. Feel free to contribute!
Rome:
Discoteca Laziale. Via G. Giolitti, opposite to the main train station Termini, or more accurately, the part where the commuter train stops. Mainly typical rock stuff (but lots of it), but also a shelf dedicated to Italian prog.
There's a large record & book shop on Vittorio Emanuele II, just opposite to the end of tram line 8.
A small record shop very close to the previously mentioned. If you stand in front of the facade of the Pantheon, the shop's on the left hand side.
Another small but quite good shop, again on Vittorio Emanuele II. Walk from the aforementioned tram stop towards Vatican, and it's close, on the left side of the street.
Several record / rock shops (clothing etc) in the Citta Universitaria ("university city")area, at least a few on Via dei Volsci. Ask the shopkeepers, they will give you directions to others as well.
Perugia :
Don't know the name of the shop, but the address is Piazza IV Novembre. Amazing amounts of CDs, lots of them OOP!

Re: Record Shops Around the World
Salerno, Italy:
Disclan. It's impossible to miss, as the store is on Corso Vittorio Emanuele 100, the main shopping street in the center. Nice selections of rock, and their own shelf for Italian 70s rock.
Kuopio, Finland:
Levykauppa Äx. Tulliportinkatu 27, just next to the market place. Awesome record store, friendly staff. I've been doing a lot of my cd shopping here.
I also have to mention their awesome webshop. If you ever need Finnish music, just order it from them.

Quimper, France:
Espace Culturel. 3 Avenue de Gourvily. I know this is a chain store, but it still had a nice selection of local Breton music. Found some nice French folk from the 70s there. Cheap prices as well.

Re: Record Shops Around the World
Turku, Finland:
All of these are in town centre.
JS: Läntinen Pitkäkatu 8a
A small shop with a diminishing collection of CDs, of which a lot is prog and jazz. Is getting more into selling new and second hand vinyl. My favourite.
8Raita: Eerikinkatu 8
Another small but very good record shop, lots of indie and 'new' rock and pop, in all formats.
Alfa Antikva: Yliopistonkatu 38
The best second hand record, comic, book & film shop in Finland, and haven't really seen better in other countries, either. A massive selection of different genres (and formats). Hundreds of new/unused and mint OOP prog, indie, etc. CDs. Vinyl section small nowdays, but again OOP stuff possible. American & Japanese comics a speciality since late 1970s.
Kane: Aurakatu 5 (shopping centre Forum)
Once the leading record shop of the town, now with the decilne of CD the owner is obviously scaling down espcially older stuff. But well worth a visit as there are still shelves of (e.g.) 1960s and 70s music on increasingly rare CDs.
Levykauppa X: Kristiinankatu 4
The local branch of the shop Niko mentioned above. Special area metal music in its various sub genres.

Re: Record Shops Around the World
Helsinki, Finland
There are many excellent record shops in Helsinki, but now I only mention one now because it is special:
Music Hunter: Unioninkatu 45 (just ten minutes walk from the main train station)
A massive CD selection, plus some vinyl. Old rock magazines, tons of memorablia (e.g. old tour books). The gem for us is that the owner is a huge DP & related fan and thus has a separate shelf for the DP family! I have found albums / releases there I did not know even existed! A must when visiting Helsinki (for the musicians here, there are brilliant instrument & gear shops close to it, just around the street corner, plus some more great record shops just a five min walk away).

Re: Record Shops Around the World
Replay Records, Perth, West Australia.
Fantastic shop where you can buy shoot loads of vinyl records from all genres including 45' and 33' and maybe the od 78' if you ask nicely
You once were able to walk in and buy old music magazines from the 60's and 70's but it has been a while since I was last there.

Cheers! I thought about doing Stockholm next but heard we'll go there next month, so I can get more up to date info (yeah, as if the wife lets me to do the entire 20 shop tour...). I also try to remember the couple of good ones in Edinburgh.

Re: Record Shops Around the World
I guess I am lucky that my wife likes to tag along when I go music store shopping.
Another record store here is 78 Records in Milligan Street, Perth. Once again you can buy any vinyl LP or 45 and if they don't have it in stock they will do anything within their power to get it in for you . . . that is good serviice

Another of my favourite record stores is Dada Records, Pier Street Perth. These guys are Vinyl specialists and once again if they don't stock it, then they will get it for you

Helsinki has amazing cd stores! I went there a couple of times, and came back with a suitcaseful>
I remember one near the train station, going up the tree round the corner, near a site that was under construction five years ago....rings any bell?
And then there's another one where they have all the dp related stuff apart from the rest of the merch.
Anyway if you go to Brussels and end up on the Boulevard Anspach (downtown), you continue on the boulevard heading towards the South (midi) station, and you'll see cd stores after cd stores (mostly second hand)>
Recommended: Rockawaybeat and one in the "rue des pierres", just next to the AB concert hall.
