Here's a copy of a Deep Purple Hub interview (well, part of it) where he explains it;

quote:

Brent: One Hub member (joef) noticed on an old concert video (Black Night In Denmark – March 1, 1972) where you were playing with no shirt on. We were talking about a scar under your left chest, extending around your side. This Hub Member had heard that you only have one lung. Is that true? And if so, what happened to cause that?

Ian: The scar is there. Yeah. Sure. I have more than one lung. I do not have two lungs. I don’t have two complete lungs. When I was 6 years old and I had just come back into the U.K. because I had been living in Germany for years – my father was connected to the military over there. And in Germany we were living in a very nice centrally heated apartment, and living very well. When we came back to England we came back to the reality of post-war Britain which was basically bust and broke, and we went to a house where there was no central heating and it was cold and drafty. Well, I came down with a case of pneumonia, and that quickly turned into a case of tuberculosis. In those days there were no drugs that they could use to fix it. So they had to open me up and they had to take the little infected parts of my left lung away. So that’s where the scar is and I lost the lower lobes of the left lung. I have more than one lung. I just don’t have the full two.

Ok thanks for that Apollo the reason i asked was because recently my 19 year old son suffered a collapsed lung for no apparent reason(spontaneous pneumothorax the doctors called it!!)and as a footballer he was quite worried about his future prospects but to encourage him as well as pointing out pro footballers and athletes that this had happened to i also pointed out that i was sure Paicey had actually lost a lung and yet had played drums in a hard rock band for all those years seems i was kinda right

You're definitely right about that: what a drummer can do, a football player can do. Here is an article about a study involving my favourite drummer of all time: Clem Burke:
