Antwerp review

This was the 20th time I saw dP on stage, and for the first time I left the concert hall with a feeling of insecurity and a bit of sadness...
Not that the show wasn't good, not at all, it was just energyless.

The setlist was pretty much the same as the previous UK and european concerts, Not Responsible was replaced by Maybe I'm a Leo.

The musicians:

Ian Gillan was singing really well, loud and clear. His voice was in a good shape and he stopped tryin to scream the parts he knows he can't scream anymore, which gave him more steadiness, strength and variations. His vocals were very high in the mix.
His singing in Wasted sunsets was particulary amazing.
In between his singin parts, his acting on stage is a bit senile, he seems tired yet relaxed.A bit as you'd imagine a senior strolling on the beach in Fort Lauderdale...

Worrying but understandable.

Steve Morse was brilliant, he made the show!
You can definitly see that he was the engine in the band that night.
The Morse part (shall I say) Contact loss/SiFLS/Well dressed guitar was a highlight.

Roger Glover was his usual self. A machine gun.

Don Airey...Well Don, I don't know where you were, but sometimes you weren't with the rest of the band!
Many solos were screwed up, especially in Fireball, and the middle part of Wring that Neck was just a mess...

Now, the most worrying of them all: Ian Paice.
I've seen Ian doing great things, I've seen him doing the bare minimum, but last night it was the bare minimum minus the energy.
The tempos were slowed down and Ian shortened everything he could.
I swear I'd never seen him so flat.

And this worries me...

Otherwise the show was good, some highlights were Wasted Sunsets (brilliant!), the Morse quarter, the bass solo on the intro of BN and BN itself.
The rest was average.

I never thought I'd write such a review for a dP show. Let's hope Paicey will get his energy back!

Ian Gillan also said that they didn't see the time going, and that they would be recording a new album in february.

Should they come back, I will be there again, hoping that this was just a slow night.

Judging by the reviews so far this tour, I think you were unlucky to be there that particular night

I think it depends on the perception, I do agree that IP seems a bit tired and is in economy mode, but the other four were really good, I hadn't heard IG so good since 2007, great setlist, Steve was perfect, driving tracks like Wasted Sunsets to perfection. Really a great great Purple gig to me, and I've seen lots of others !

Steve and Big Ian were amazing, that's true!

Ian Paice was definitly in slow mode, and as a drummer myself I must have felt it more than other people.

This said, a lot of people who hadn't seen dP in some years (2 or 3) were quite surprised at how skinny and "old" Gillan looked, but still found the show amazing and were saying how great of a singer he is.

As I said, I didn't find it was a bad show, but I think we (us in Antwerp), probably had a low show, if only by judging by the clips from Amsterdam the night before where the whole band seemed on fire.

Maybe I worry too much too quickly!

Well, I'll see in Amiens whether they are better or not !

But Honestly I've seen them this summer and three times last year, and I thought this show was better than these four shows, so not a really low show to me...

Just out of curiosity, you're from Belgium, where did you see them this summer?
Was it this last summer that I missed them in Tienen?

Yes, I'm from Liège, and I went to Dormund to see them in June. Tienen was last years, and I missed it too, but I went to see them earlier that summer in Montreux, so no regrets about that to me.

I just realised that it had been 2 YEARS since I saw them!
I saw them four times in 2006-2007, about every six months, but the last time was in November 2007.

Wow, time flies!
