Burn from San Diego (Perks and Tit)
A classic version in the sense that RB is completely lost at times, and out of tune!
That it was the last gig of the tour might have something to do with it, but something also happens to the guitar. Maybe a breaking string throws the guitar out of tune. On the other hand, there's no sound of RB switching the lead from one guitar to another, or indeed a break during which he'd had the time to change the string. In any case, check out the track:
The trouble seems to start around 04.12 into the track (time inc. the intro etc.), when RB hits the riff. It doesn't turn out right, and then he is probably attempting to fix things during the GH sung part. We hear him doing a long trill, there's feedback... and when he hits the riff again, the guitar is out of tune.
He still hits the solo. RB makes the mistake in counting the bars, or rather, the band playes the right number of bars before hitting another part, but RB's still finishing the 1st segment of the solo.
The arpeggio part sounds out of tune. Clearly frustrated and confused, he again has considerable trouble with the main riff after the solo.
He soldiers on but I don't understand why did he not go for a back-up guitar during the keyboard solo? But he seems to pretty much sort things out during the keys solo. He is perhaps forced to improvise, as the harmonics he does during the 'Bach' section are a bit different to the usual version.
He still has feedback issues after the track, but has managed to get the tuning in order pretty well during Burn. He checks it after the song. There are some sound problems during MJTYL, but from there on, everything seems to be in order.
The recording's officially out on the Sonic Zoom / Purple Records label and is recommended to those who'd like to hear something different from DP for a change!

Yeah, that's right. The guitar was out of tune right from the beginning. And the sound was different from Cal.Jam.

I always thought Blackmore wanted Burn to sound that way during that concert since Coverdale said at the beginning of the concert that it would be a "bastard." It's performed fast and very in your face. Maybe Blackmore played Burn with his foot during this concert?

I love it when Ritchie gets lost during songs! It's so funny to hear the nonchalanche he has in making things up! the Burn riff(both in the '70 and in 1991) is a great example but I also remember laughing out loud the first time I heard Lady double dealer from the "MkIII:the final concerts".
Maybe we should open a topic to discuss the best Blackmore errors...
The San Diego show is great and it also features a marvellous Mistreated.

Please note that the San Diego show was three days after the Cal Jam. Perhaps some anger and frustration from that day was still there.
