Re: permission to talk...er..land
You're right we haven't had a lot of good NEW bands getting a major deal and having so much media. No they aren't GREAT, but why can't we enjoy them for what they are (fun and headbangin) and for the fact that a Hard Rock Cd from a new band is actually selling more than a couple of thousands copies to friends and HR die-hards.
Better them than Justin Timbershit!

Re: permission to talk...er..land
I've heard this point before and while I agree with it somewhat I can't see why I should be happy when a band, rock or no rock, gets succesfull! If I don't like them when they're not shifting any copies why should I suddenly change my opinion just because they're plastered everywhere? I have no problem with people liking The Darkness but when I actually see statements like "best band in the last 20 years" in print I have a fit! To me it is almost like they're taking the piss out of 80s rock, in a post-modern Spinal Tap kind of way and that I almost find offensive, especially when people seem to think it is all done seriously! Each to his own I suppose, there are plenty of British bands that came out the last 10, 20 years that piss rings round The Darkness (I'll bore you with that on some other post) so for the time being I'll just be a stick-in-the-mud and listen to them...

Re: permission to talk...er..land
Im glad the Darkness are around. Im not a fan of them but being at school still you get loads of kids starting to pick up a Squier Strat at this time and get some Korn tabs or something off the net and drop all the strings 5 tones and play some inaudible nonsense. I like the Darkness because im hearing some solo work going on and some dynamics and a bit less distortion. They might not be technicians of the year as far as guitar goes but they definately show signs of influence (Brian May) and worked out solos and riffs which is more than you can say for andy rock/metal band who have come into popularity in the last decade

Re: permission to talk...er..land
Found this just now, was too amusing not to post, it is Lemmy's opinion on The Darkness:
"The Darkness are a novelty group like the Barron Knights... a cabaret act. They should be on at the Wigan Casino."

Glad to be wrong actually, quite content to listening to the novelty act records I got in my collection at the moment without adding a new one.

Re: permission to talk...er..land
Not that impressed by them. They don't do much for me. A few good tracks here and there.
But when my girlfriend (an R&B fan who likes Justin Timberlake) is talking about buying their album, I have to ask myself some questions.
Why has she laughed at my music collection for so long, and now suddenly likes the Darkness?
If she had taken time out to delve deeper into my collection, she would have found a lot more interesting and exciting records than what the Darkness are doing.
Ah, but wait. The bands in my music collection don't get played on the radio. Or on MTV. No one writes music articles on them in mainstream publications, they don't play at Glastonbury and they don't support Robbie Williams.
So is this just another music fad pushed down our throats until the next big thing comes along, or is this the re-birth of rock n roll? I'd like to say the latter, but I'd go with the former.
And besides, David Byron did that whole falsetto thing much better anyway!

Re: permission to talk...er..land
But of course they get attention, they're a NEW band, not with groundbreaking music perhaps but they do what they do quite good.
And a band doing this kind of music haven't got this kind of attention in a loong time.
And the singer is good, in my book anyway.

Re: permission to talk...er..land
Aaarggghhh! Who just compared Plant with The Darkness singer?!? This guy is probably breaking mirrors for a living, just seen the I Believe In A Thing Called Love vid which verifies that! To be serious though Rahul put it in a better way that I ever could. Hype, hype, hype people.
