permission to talk...er..land

Permission to land (the darkness) is one helluva debut? album.
Best new hardrock I've heard in ages. Brilliant actually.
Is this off topic.. no not really, they did open for Purple last summer.
Anyway, one album I can recommend!

It's funny, at one point during the Mean Fiddler gig I thought: yeah Glenn could really teach that Justin a thing or two...

The only reason your daughter has The Darkness on is because they've been hyped and promoted by their label and the press as 'the next big thing' and plastered all over industry display cases like TOTPs, Smash Hits and the like. You'll be watching her going back to whatever is flavour of the month as soon as the band is left alone again for the next 'sensation'. Sad but true and I wouldn't have a problem with it really if we were talking about a real rock band that was getting a chance and not a bunch of gimmicky sods who are sold on the strength of their "singer" (a term loosely used obviously in this case) to squeal like a castrated pig. Off-tune that is. emoticon

I can't stand them but lets face it, they are getting airplay, promotion and publicity. All the things Purple should but don't get. emoticon

I agree! It's just media hype. If bands like Purple got the same kind of media attention they would be up there just like the darkness are now!

The Darkness, while perhaps not to everyone's taste are IMO easily the best British band for 20 years (or the best one to get any lime light)! I personally love their material and I thought they were great before anyone had heard of them! Ok they're not Purple, but at least they're talented musicians and it makes such a brilliant change from all this hyped up indie crap around (Coldplay, Travis, Stereophonics, etc.). And I do have to admit PTL is better than Shades of Deep Purple, so if The Darkness continue to progress and get better they could end up being a classic rock band in a era of forgettable crap!

Suppose it is only my opinion (call it stupid or whatever, I'm not fussed) but hearing people proclaim this abomination of a rock band as the best British band in the last 20 years shows the sorry state both listeners and the scene is at today. The only reason people make lofty claims like that is because they haven't heard another British band the last 20 years or not bothered to and just went for the first thing the industry shoved down their throats. Finally, mentioning The Darkness and 'talent' in the same sentence is even funnier than Justin Hawkins' supposed 'singing'! emoticon I saw them live a year ago before they put their album out and sold stupid amounts to 14-year olds and I am expecting them to hit the bargain bins in double-time as the industry moves on to the next fad. They'll be luck if they get a second album out.
