I have tinitus so I'm sure to wear protection.
It happened at a Neil Young gig some 20 years ago.

I have tinitus as well, that´s why I spend so much time on the computer!emoticon

The first concert were I used protection was Whitesnake this year which was probably a bit too late, and on Blackmore´s Night I didn´t use anything as well, as I thought during the accoustic parts it wouldn´t be neccessary.

I've been to well over 100 hard rock concerts. I now have a fairly consistent high pitch sound that I live with every day.

I believe the main cause of this is seeing shows in small venues (clubs, bars, etc.) where they have non-professional sound men and acts that just want the sound to be as loud as possible in a small space.

I never go to a show these days without my ear plugs. I highly recommend to everyone that attends loud events to take a high quality pair of ear plugs.

What I do is wear the earplugs for supporting acts and only take them out for particular songs or groups. i.e. If it's Deep Purple - no ear plugs allowed! emoticon

Yes I do. I want to be able to hear when I'm 60 and still go to shows. If you got to a show ever couple of months, i would definitely get some. You can spend big bucks or just pick up some cheapies. You can always tweak the cheapies out a bit during your favorite tunes. But the last time I saw Purple, they were outdoors and it wasn't THAT loud. I wore plugs for the openers, but not Purple.

You´d be surprised. Actually it doesn´t effect the sound at all. There only a few very high pitched tunes that those earplugs filter out. You won´t hear them without those, but when you´ve got them in and put them out you´ll hear that it actually sounds clearer if you´ve got them in, no joke!

I always use ear protection when rehearsing with my band, and usually on concerts. I will throw in a tip for toilet-paper for that use. It's actually great, for free as every concert place has a toilet, and gives a better and nicer protection than most earplugs. emoticon

Re: Do you wear protection...

When I saw Purple at Wembley in June it was so loud that everything sounded distorted and I could actually only hear it properly when I put my fingers in my ears, which is a shame because whenever I did IG sounded great, and I could hardly hear for several hours afterwards. My lesson is learned.

I had tinnitus caused mostly by using headphones too much and too loud for both listening to music, (not advisable), and highly distorted electric guitar, (monumentally stupid), but over the last few months my ears have gotten a lot better since I've stopped plugging in and not listening to music through headphones as much ad at lower volume. I'm sure that in theory that shouldn't happen but I can only call it as I see it.

This subject intrigues me. When you go to hear live, loud music then why stick something in your ears that stops you hearing what you've turned up for?
I appreciate the health risks for people who play in bands, and for punters who go to gigs 3 times a week 52 weeks a year (where are you mcp emoticon) but for most of the rest of us then is this really a problem?
