The Seven Wonders of Rock

The Seven Wonders of Rock. Seven mighty monuments that are literally the greatest wonders of the rock world, legends that will inspire awe and wonder long after they have turned to dust.

The list might include people, bands, songs, even individual gigs... or anything else you think is a true wonder of rock.

So, what are your seven?

Rising, RAINBOW
Bat Out of Hell, MEAT LOAF
Van Halen, VAN HALEN

apologies to the Beatle's White Album, which I did have on the list until I decided to replace it with Rainbow Rising.

Odd how people have interpreted the title of this thread as 7 bands or 7 people etc. My interpretation was of 7 from a mixture of the categories rather than 7 of each. Much more limited and also more difficult but here goes.

Chuck Berry
The Beatles
In Rock
Robert Plant
Smoke on the Water
Sgt Pepper
Jimi Hendrix

I wanted to put Blackmore, but while I think he is a way better guitarist than Hendrix ever was, I believe Hendrix enabled him to become so much more than just a brilliant guitarist by extending the possibilies of what a guitarist could get away with.

Great idea for a thread Mr Meadows. Rather than just list my favourite 7 of everything, how about this?

1) Deep Purple Mark 2
2) Lennon & McCartney
3) Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Get Your Ya Ya's Out & Sticky Fingers (what a run!)
4) Haight Ashbury
5) Woodstock 69
6) The Hammond organ
7) Stairway To Heaven

There are too many to list and the Beatles obviously should be mentioned, but I just don't like them - so I'm not going to list them. I've never forgiven PM for writing the Frog Song either. So I thought I'd stick to artists that I do like to listen to and have shown tenacity, longevity and guts and can stand out from the dirge of their peers and of their time and seem to stick two fingers up and say: 'screw you, screw the world and if you don't like what we do, you know what you can do.'

-------

Ritchie - for playing guitar as though it was a real musical instrument. Tone, depth of feeling unsurpassed to this day, even if his technique is probably no better than the best of the rest.

Jethro Tull - Brave for going his own way using an unusual front man rock instrument. That takes guts.

Ian Anderson - Thick as a Brick, Maddison Square Garden 1972. Brilliant entertainment and he's always funny to watch too.

Queen - great rock sound with May's guitar sound that is instantly recognisable anywhere. The late Freddie was a genius communicator with audiences, experimental artist adapting to many types of music. It took guts to dabble with Opera and incorporate that into a six minute BR for a commercial audience. Thank god for the late Kenny Everett, otherwise he might have spent his entire career selling clothes at Kensington Market.

Kate Bush - Brilliant, original artist. Genius actually.

Paul Weller - Great songwriter, superb voice. A true Mod Brit and honest to boot. Never bullshitted anyone or sold his audiences short. It took guts to chuck in The Jam at the height of their fame and do his own thing (even if he did piss off the other two) and he is still one of the most respected artists around.

Oasis - Not original perhaps, but they don't half write some good songs, even if they are modelled on a lot of Beatles stuff. A brilliant gem amongst of load of !@#$ coming out of the nineties. In fact, they're a lot better than anything coming out of the naughties too. Anyone see the BBC red button concert with that chorus in the background? It was really excellent.
