No one has mentioned Jan Akkerman. Wasn't he supposed to be one of the top guitarists too?
I remember him in Focus.

I've only seen Jan Akkerman live playing an acoustic 'jazz' set. He's a great player but in technical terms I think he was probably a step below the other two players on the bill (Clive Carrol and Eric Roche).
I loved his work in Focus, but I'm not sure whether the current Focus guitar player is technically even better -- kind of a Blackmore/Morse situation
Not meaning to take anything away from Akkerman, who is great and I would definitely go and see again live.
If I did a top 10, it would probably contain a few acoustic players. I'm not sure if it's fair compare the two, as they are really different instruments, but I like the tone of a good acoustic player (steel or nylon) better than a whole load of 'good' electric players.
