I don't generally do top 10 lists, as many guitarists, including all those listed, are very good at what they do. But that said...
Pick up a copy of Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco Du Luco - Friday Night in San Francisco and listen to that, and then see if your list changes at all. And they do all that on acoustic guitars, which is even more amazing. This is an outstanding album of pure guitar music, by amazing guitarists. Have to look outside rock sometimes.
That and Passion Grace and Fire are both amazing albums. And their live show was maybe the best concert that I have ever attended. Of course, the best part was the opening act, none other than Mr. Steve Morse, who also joined on stage at the end and gave not one inch of ground to the other three. Flame suit doned.
No need for the flame suit! Each to their own, as they say! Personally, I'd rather stick pins in meself, but there you go!

Re: your top 10 guitarists
At a Deep Purple forum can not avoid having
Ritchie Blackmore as number one. Steve Morse
and Tommy Bolin should also have a place, but
what should I have done with these names on
my list.
1. Ritchie Blackmore
2. Jimmy Page
3. Rory Gallagher
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. David Gilmour
6. Showy White
7. Pete Townshend
8. Mark Knopfler
9. Steve Miller
10. Eric Clapton

Re: your top 10 guitarists
Ritchie Blackmore (he takes up the whole top ten, so the list starts at no. 11):
Eddie Van Halen
Tony Iommi
Ulrich Roth
Michael Schenker
Yngwie Malmsteen
Gary Moore
Johnny Winter
Alex Skolnick

Great list!
As far as Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco Du Luco...I liked the "One Night...", as well as other recordings by each performer, but I'm just not into the "jazzy" thing. Unless Deep Purple are doing it

Good point about DP and jazz. One thing I'm sorry they lost in the 1970s is the jazz(y) thing they had from 1969 to 1970. Okay, that still was in evidence during the instrumental section of CIT (check out Live in Denmark for example).
I like 'swinging', rhythm-orientated jazz. I don't like the 'cacaphonical, let's-make-it-as-complicated-as-possible' type of jazz. In relation to rock bands, that's the reason I never liked King Crimson. They have that kind of stuff going on all the time. It just gives me an headache.

Re: your top 10 guitarists
Nr. 1 inside rock music: Ritchie Blackmore
Nr. 1 outside rock music: Django Reinhardt
Nr. 2 to 10 (as I'm not really into jazz or classical guitar, they're just rock / blues guitarists):
2: Jimi Hendrix
3: Jimmy Page
4: Jeff Healey
5: Eddie Van Halen
6: Johnny Winter
7: Tommy Bolin
8: Eric Clapton (1960s / 1970s)
9: Chuck Berry (for his pioneer work)
10: Keith Richards (for his pioneer work)

The best I've ever heard him play was during the Journeyman tour, documented on the 24 Nights DVD and CD. Absolutely brilliant work.
