Re: DP 'In Concert - 1970-72' CD
The Allman Brothers Band still draw an incredibly diverse cross-section of fans to their shows because they have the ability and the balls to play a totally different set every night and do it in a first-class,untired manner. The same, unfortunately, can't be said for the present incarnation of Deep Purple. And for the record,Live At The Fillmore East is THE best live album by any band.Ever.CHEERS

I have always preferred this to MIJ, i just love the sound and feel of the recordings. Appears to be more of a group vibe plus the guitar and organ sound is immense! Also less dull spots like 'The Mule' and some of the parts of 'Space Truckin'.

"Mandrake Root" features some of the absolite best lead playing of the time, in my humble opinion.

I can mostly agree with you, but I think it's hard to pin point one live album to be the best ever. Live At The Fillmore East is very different to Made In Japan, and MiJ is very different to The Last Waltz etc. etc. These bands, among many others- to many to name, operate with completely different styles, both in music and playing, so I find it hard to name THE best.
They have all given me great joy over the years, and I listen to them quite often.
Now... The Allmans change their set list very often, and they have a lot of songs to draw from. You failed to mention this: Many of their songs are covers, and The ABB only tour for a few months each year. Makes it a lot easier to make noticeable changes doesen't it? I mean, compared to a band that are touring two years at the time, and do no covers?
While we're talking about the Allmans, I guess you've heard An Evening With, first and second set? One word: WOW!!!!!

Re: DP 'In Concert - 1970-72' CD
Good points,KB.The ABB only tour through the summer months here in the U.S. and they do perform alot of covers but,for me anyway, that adds to the excitement of going to see them(which I do just about every summer!)This past tour they did a smokin' cover of Dazed And Confused. The summer before it was Aretha Franklins version of "The Weight",which when it was covered by Aretha in the late '60's had a session guitarist named Duane Allman on guitar. My point was that DP would be wise maybe to play a few less shows but make them more adventurous. And yes "An Evening With...1st and 2nd sets are both phenomenal!!I believe they recorded parts from both sets here in Boston at the Orpheum Theatre-where I'm going in April to see The Cult for the first time in almost twenty years!!CHEERS
