Bad Beyond Belief

Last night, I watched Bad Beyond Belief – Mark Morse recorded in Montruex, 2006. Despite the gibberish posted here, Morse has not gotten any better at playing hard rock. His guitar and his playing are totally unsuitable for a hard rock band as was quite evident during his guitar solo during Well Dressed Guitar.

Gillan’s voice is nearly ruined from the excessive touring and he struggles to get by with what little the has-been has left. Paice has gotten comfy without Blackmore but is still impressive. Airey is a marginally acceptable replacement.

There have been many humiliating moments in the history of Deep Purple especially since the House of Blue Light. A bogus lineup touring as Deep Purple and playing a cabaret version of Smoke on the Water is close to the top of my list. On the bright side, Morse finally looked right at home while playing in a lousy Vegas lounge act!

If you kept going back to a restaurant you didn't like, to keep sampling food by a chef you say cant cook, people would say its time to pay your next visit to the funny farm.

He's offering the review because all he's heard is "watch Montreux at 2006 and then try and tell me Morse is still bad". So he did, and obviously wasn't happy with it. I agree with him mainly. Paice was very good, much much better than the 80s, Gillan's voice has lost the power and range, though I find his "new" lower voice to be very nice to listen to. Unfortunately, they play only 3-4 songs from the last 20 years, and it's hard to hear that new voice as much as I'd like to. Steve Morse is still widdling away, with brief moments of brilliance but mostly the same solo played over and over again. I think Don Airey played great on this DVD, and Glover is very good as well, the intro jam to Highway Star was awesome. I'd have to say the weak links were Morse and Gillan.

I think the Montreux show are very, very good!

I may not be Steve's biggest fan, but I think he has improved a lot in the last couple of years. Even if he widdles some, it seems like he is trying to change his style a bit towards "english hard rock". Good! Over a long period of time it's better to have a guitarist with a big smile on his face (and a large portion of talent) than a grumpy guitarist (with a larger postion of talent). A band have to get along to stay together....

The band sound tight, and they all play very well. Yes, Paice is better now than in the eighties. It's fun to watch him again! Gillan? Well, I'm impressed that he still can do what he does at his age. I don't expect him to sound like he did in his twenties (like some here...).

I guess that's one way to bring in the new year. Shall I offer you my condolences?

I recently got this DVD as well and I quite enjoy it!! Good perfomances all around.

In particular Ian Paice kicks ass. Once again when Paice is on he's still one of the best even today at his age. Unfortunately in the studio these days he gets a bit lazy and doesn't sound so inspired.

Paice is still quite good, yes! The only reason he has slowed down a bit is because of age, but IMO he is way better today than in the eighties (when he sounded like a drum machine).

In the studio....well, IMO he do a good job on Rapture. More fills than in many years, and again, way better than in the eighties.

Montreux DVD? Very good show indeed!

Not as good as MKII, but I really like it. I just wish Don would get a solo in ST.
