Knebworth 85

Just Listened to this for the first time in ages.Have to say IMHO the band despite playing with a lot of energy and enthusiasm were bloody awful! Gillans voice was dreadful (cold again?)and tmib played like sh@t!(what did he do to get that awful tone was it a change of equipment from Rainbow?)Paiceys drumming was plodding at best and yet the strange thing is when i was at the show i never really noticed how bad they were I remember being a bit dissapointed at the performance but i guess i was just a bit too excited about the whole reunion thing to really notice. The only track that is a highlight for me on the album is KAYBD the other highlight of course was hearing JL play again instead of being reduced to backing musician as he was in Whitesnake. The question you have to ask is if DP performed like this in the 70s would they have been the legend they became? The other question of course is with all the talk of an anniversary reunion if MK2 were this bad at around 40 after after some 12 years apart is it really a good idea to reform at over 60(nearly 70 in JLs case) after another in this case over 12 year break how bad will they be this time around?Yes I know they performed brilliantly towards the end of the last reunion (TBRO tour was fantastic as TMIB had decided to play again by this time)And IG does sound a whole lot better now than he did then but is it really such a good idea ?

It's not their best PS tour performance, it's not their best tour, but for me it remains something magical; dP were back and I saw them for the first on stage in Belgium in 85. This era, however bed it may seem, was a new beginning and I still love it.

No, never. Since 1984, the entity called "Deep Purple" mainly lives from its past.

I don't know. Such an anniversary reunion would be for nostalgic, not for musical purposes. Perhaps it's better if they don't do it.

To me, the intro of HS remains one of the best ever... I also liked Gillan singing "A Gyspsy's Kiss" because you really feel the energy the song is delivering (I know some people think he's singing awfully on it).

The intro of Space Truckin' is also (together with the Nobody's Perfect version) one of the best.

Ritchie's guitar sound is something I had difficulties to cope with, either during the 1985 tour or during the 1987 tour...

The thing is Al unfortunately a couple of great intros and a decent song performance or two does not a make for a good show. Not being a guitarist i have no idea what TMIB did to destroy his sound during the 80s(you would have thought someone would have mentioned to him hey Blackers you sound like sh@t!!whats going on with the guitar sound there? or maybe they were a bit scared to mention) the thing is he was bound to know what he sounded like himself i suppose he must have been happy enough maybe it was an deliberate attempt not to sound like the 70s rehashed perhaps to say hey look weve moved on a bit but then by the 90s he sounded much more like himself! The thing i always find annoying about post reunion DP is that the two great antagonists ie RB and IG were the two who really let the band down performance wise

The second half of that show was awesome. Gillan had much worse days on that tour.

Btw, were there anyt plans to release the remastered version of concert? The 1991 vsn sounds awful. I'm sure we'd have more respect for it had it sounded better. Still, not a great performance.

Re: Knebworth 85

About the guitar: Blackmore' sound changed during the eighties, for the worse, and maybe it was an attempt to sound more "up to date" or "modern". At that time all those Malmsteens, Satrianis etc. were popping up all over the place, and it seems like Blackmore tried to "say" something like "hey, I can do that too". It wasn't until the early ninties that Blackmore went back to a more seventies sound (and playing) again. Maybe he realized that he was a "guitarist of the seventies", and there wasn't any need for any change? You know, if it ain't broken, don't fix it!

The same thing could be said about Lord's hammondsound during the eighties. Bloody awful! I think that Lord's best hammondsound, apart from the seventies, came about the time Steve Morse joined. Morse wanted Jon to go back to the seventies sound, and he did. His sound on Purpendicular and Abandon (and the following tours) were outstanding. Slightly distortied- The Beast was back!

---
"It can't be hemmoroids! Everybody knows he's a perfect asshole!" Ian Gillan commenting on Blackmore's mystery illness causing show cancelations...a long time ago!

The second half of the show was better than the first half but awesome? no not IMHO TMIBs solo in ST was painful at best and the guitar work during the SK duels was horrendous(ive always thought that Blackers in the 80s sounded like some tribute artist failing miserably to recreate the true RB) quite sad really when you think what he had been and still could be as he proved in the 90s.You are correct about Gillan having worse days though the Paris 85 video is testament to that what a shame that Paris is the only proper video from that tour

I'm not sure whether it's possible to get a better sound out of the tapes the BBC provided for the 1991 release.

If someone has the bootleg LP (the one from FM, not from audience) or bootleg CD of that show, perhaps he could compare it sound wise to the official release? Perhaps the bootleg source has better sound ...
