What if . . .?

This is something that I often wonder about as I am a big fan of Joe Satriani, I may as well share my thoughts. I have attempted asking this question on other forums but I never get any sensible answers.

How would have DP gone if Joe had been given the permanent job as guitarist after Blackers left?

Would it have worked out and do you think he would be still there today?

Hard to say. Joe did a great job back in 93 and 94, but I think he really is a solo artist.
I find his solo albums, if not more interesting than Steve Morse's, more commercial and heavy-oriented and in a way less creative. Which leads to my thoughts that Steve is a less stereotypical guitarist, which suits deep Purple better.

I think that, had Satriani stayed with dP, they probably would have gone more classic hard rock-which of course would have agreed with many, but maybe not with me.I like the fact that dP's guitarists have always been a bit odd.

Satriani was also much more popular than Morse, and Deep Purple would maybe have gained a bigger status in the U.S.

I think, both ways would have worked, but I'm glad they went for someone a bit more obscure and less hard rock oriented.

I admit I am not a fan of Satch and his ilk ie Vai Petrucci,Malmsteen etc and find their styles of playing though technically brilliant extremely boring I like a guitar solo to be part of a song and not the whole song(something which TMIB is the master of)I think it would have been an absolute disaster!if Satch had got the job on a permanent basis he did a very good job filling in for TMIB and is talented enough to pull of most styles of music so did a good job on DPs existing setlist but in all honesty had they got to the stage of making an album then obviously Satch would then have had his own input and the thought of a Satch widdlefest on a DP album fills me with dread emoticon emoticon emoticon

Satch is a brilliant guitarist indeed, you ask him to play anything at all and he will give you a heck of an exhibition.

I believe personally he would have been great for DP with his more suited style of playing and it would have been great if Joe had continued to keep the band on a classic rock level and just continue where Blackmore left off. DP could use more exposure in the US for sure.

Steve Morse is a fantastic guitarist but I would have enjoyed Satriani's work more, he is always a joy to watch and learn from.

Satch is indeed a brilliant technical guitarist and seems to be able to copy just about any style thrown at him, but as i said before the problem with him staying with DP would be when it came to new material! he simply does not write good songs but instead writes guitar gymnastic exercises which get extremely boring after a couple of tracks! It would have been interesting to see what he came up with in the confines of a band though but for me he is very much a solo artist and quite honestly i could not stand DP turning into vehicle for Satchs tasteless million notes a second guitar histrionics but that is of course only my opinion

I'm not sure how Satch would work in a creative band enviroment, I don't think he's ever done anything like that, has he?

Morse had more experience working as part of a band, rather than just a solo artist, I'm not sure Satch would have been able to make the transition, like Malmsteen he may not be great at working as part of a team... Obviously that's just conjecture.

Would have made no difference. Deep Purple was lost past it's prime in the early 90's with Blackmore there. Satch would not have rescued them.
