HOBL underrated?

Tracks like Spanish Archer and Strangeways are DP at their best imo. Like in the former track, the way IG pushes his vocals + RB in improvisational mode. The sadness in the song - it's just brilliant stuff. It could only come out of Mk II, if you know what I mean. The drama, the rock and roll... I miss it. :/

Re: HOBL underrated?

Totally agree with you. HoBL is clearly underrated. It is an excellent hard rock album, to some extent more achieved than PS.

The Spanish Archer is my favourite track, but The Unwritten Law or Black & White are little gems to me as well.

Hard Lovin' Woman live version is a pure Purple rock'n'roll moment, so is Dead or Alive.

Mad Dog could easily belong to Who Do We Think We Are.

Mitzi Dupree and Call of the Wild are maybe the weakest tracks, but they're part of Purple humour and I can't blame the band for sometimes making such numbers.

Bad Attitude is a wonderful opener. Shame it is not used live anymore. I'd love to hear a Purple show opened with an extended intro of it...!

This topic returns quite often. I guess it means that people really like this album.

Anyway, I enjoy it a lot and I very ofetn get back to it.

I wish the Mk2 players weren't so harsh for itemoticon

HOBL is the best album put together by MK11. I don't think there is a track there I don't like.

Yes indeed a very underrated album and could be rated much higher than it is / was.

It's a great album. A couple of fillers (Call of the wild, Hard lovin' woman), but on the whole great songs.
Probably the steadier of their post-reunion albums.

yes. its a shame this wasn't the album that launched deep purple into the big time. they could have been up there with led zeppelin with this album. emoticon

I think its a very good album and like it far more than PS which has always been a dissapointment for me.HOBL in my opinion is MK2s best post reunion album and for me sounds much more like classic DP than PS which sounds like Rainbow with Gillan on vocals, favourite tracks are Bad Attitude (great opener),Spanish Archer(vintage Blackmore),Strangeways(quirky but brilliant)and im one of the few it seems who likes Call Of The Wild which is a bit of 70s sounding rock/pop(bloody awful video thoughemoticon )

I think it the weakest album Purple ever(?) made. Ok, Spanish.. and maybe one more track.
But all in all.. Boring...

I think it's regarded at about the level that it should be and merits.

Would be cool to hear BA live, though.
