In Norway the same US made guitar cost about $2800-2900, at least...
And that's not a joke!

Re: Are the Fender Highway One guitars any good?
Ok so I did change my mind about a good Fender or Gibson guitar, I decided to buy a good quality Maton acoustic 12 string guitar, very nice instrument indeed.
I look forward to the challenge of learning to play 12 strings and they tell me it's not hard to adapt from playing 6 to 12 stings, we'll see about that

Re: Are the Fender Highway One guitars any good?
I've been using two guitars for a while, an ESP which cost me a packet in 2001 and a 1998 Charvel which has had to be maintained quite a lot over the years to keep it playing well.
Earlier this year I needed a cheap guitar as both guitars were acting up and I had a gig in a couple of days, no time to get them serviced in time hence the need for a quick addition to my batch of guitars.
So I went and found a Chinese-made Squier costing EUR245 and the second I started playing it in the shop it was perfect. Lovely low action, termolo that stayed perfectly in tune without a string lock etc.
There were several USA Fenders in the shop so I tried them out too and not one of them had the feel of the Squier despite costing close to EUR2000. It wasn't a case of me being biased toward the Squier in any way as I've always said I'd never buy copies again, but the Squier was a superior guitar in every way to the high priced Fenders.
I've since used the Squier to record the new album and gigged it without any problems whatsoever. I've since gone and bought another one and these two guitars are now my no 1 & 2 choices for gigs.

Given the choice now, I'll go with Squiers every time. I won't pay for a guitar which has a certain brand on it if I can pick up a superior guitar for a fraction of the price. I've since read reviews of both these guitars online and it's usually the same old "cheap, Indonesian rubbish" type sneers rather than any constructive critcism.

Re: Are the Fender Highway One guitars any good?
Yeah Dave, I've noticed the same.
As I have previously mentioned I have a cheap Yamaha Pacifica, and it's the best Stratocaster-type guitar I've ever tried.
I'm no good player, but I know what feels right in my hands, and my Yamaha surely does.

Re: Are the Fender Highway One guitars any good?
Yep, play the guitar that feels right rather than has a particular name on it.
As a follow on, I was a party last night and the band that was playing asked me to get up and play a song with them. The guitar I was given was a USA Fender...I had a terrible time trying to play it. The other guitar player had a Squier and I was chatting to both of them afterward and even the Fender guy agreed that the Squier was a nicer guitar to play.
I'm not on a Fender bashing crusade or anything, it's simply my experience that for the price I'd expect them to [email protected]#$ all over Squiers, but none I've ever tried out has done so

Re: Are the Fender Highway One guitars any good?
I hate to break it you Mr. KillerBananas, but I used to work for a guitar manufacturer in Memphis for about 2 years. Anything that was ordered "special" for a customer came from the same stock bodies and necks. We built the guitar in the shop, but the custom shop guys would put in certain electronics or whatever the customer wanted.
The guitar itself, is nothing special, it's just double the price of anything else we built.

Re: Are the Fender Highway One guitars any good?
I don't want to shatter anybody's dreams but these days you are paying for the name not the quality. A MIM Strat costs Fender $85, list price $500+? A Squier Strat costs Fender $65, list price $180+. To add insult to injury Fenders are now being built to a budget with cheaper parts.
Fender is also being cute with accessory parts as well. A while ago they introduced a set of locking tuners, made by Sperzel but branded Fender, excellent quality. These locking tuners are now being made considerably cheaper in China! Same part number, same price!
Gibson isn't much better, the quality coming out of the factory is terrible. Friend of mine works in a guitar shop, every Gibson that comes out of the box needs work done to it, mainly to the nut and the action, to make them playable.

Re: Are the Fender Highway One guitars any good?
Nearly 15 years later... I am the second owner of a 2003 Highway One Strat which I bought in 2019 and pleased with the guitar. The original owner did some modifications to it since he first bought it such as a scalloped neck (Malmsteen style) and numerous pickups with his final choice of the DiMarzio Area 67s. He states the 67s are close to the CS69s but without the hums.
Perhaps my pleasure comes from the mods as I honestly cannot say whether the stock features of the Highway One would have been to my satisfaction. One such example is that I do not care for the stock bridge so I will have a Wilkinson WV6-SB installed as I have read positive reviews of the latter bridge.
