Government Mule: Tampa State Theater - 11/10/05
As an anniversary gift last Thursday (celebrating 4 years of marriage), THE WIFE purchased tickets for us to see the mighty Government Mule playing at the State Theater in downtown Tampa. So you all (that’s how they say everybody in the red neck south) don’t think I got off easy, prior to attending the concert we ate at Ruth’s Chris steakhouse (pricey place).
About the show:
The Theater was an awesome place to attend a show (its listed as a US national historic site) and the Mule packed in about 2.5 to 3k. Here’s some background history to the place that makes for an interesting read: http://www.tampatheatre.org/history.php
The sound was crystal clear and nowhere as bad as the junk I heard when I saw Yngwie a few weeks ago in some !@#$-hole in St. Pete. Oh and by the way the Mule is a thousand times better than Yngwie!!
This concert along with the ABB earlier this year, was the best concert I saw. I’ll even venture to stay that this ranks as one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, ranking neck and neck w/ DP in 2004 at the Beacon. The show was 3 hours long with a 45 min intermission break. The first half of the show consisted of their self penned material.
The Mule stretched out more in the second half w/ cover tunes and some wicked ass jams.
Personnel:
If there is a better live guitarist than Warren Haynes right now, I have yet to hear of him. The man is flat-out amazing. I thought he was great when I saw w/ the Allmans, but with the mule he pushes the envelope even further. And what a soulful voice. Man is just a friggin musical prodigy!!
The keyboard/Hammond player, Andy Louis, is an awesome Hammond player!! On the Deja Voodoo cd he doesn’t sound anything special, but live its a different story. Andy needs to be heard/seen live to fully judge his rightful place as a great Hammond player. Mat Abts, who along w/ Paicey is one of my favorite drummers. He’s got a style like IP that’s distinctively his…and I love it. He was great all night, as was the bassist. Do not miss this band!! They are one of the best live band out there!!!
Setlist:
Mr. Man
Lay Your Burden Down
Perfect Shelter
About to Rage
I’m a ram
Life Before Insanity
Rocking Horse
Soul Shine
As Long As I can see the light
Birth of the Mule
World Gone Wild
Wakka Wakka Jam
Fallen Down (included snippets of Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight)
Time to Confess
Blind Man in the Dark
Encore:
John the Revelator

Great review, bad mofo.I caught The Allmans this past summer(Mansfield,MA) and it was a dream come true.Warren and Derek were flat-out amazing. No boring setlists or tired, retread dog and pony shows with The Mule, either, although it's been a few years since I caught'em live.CHEERS

You guys don't know how lucky you are to live in the country of The Allman's! My dream is to get to see them live, but I guess that they never tour Europe.
As comfort I got the DVD from Beacon '03, and I guess I have seen it about 200 times! Great! Just bloody great!!
In my mind one of the best bands ever, and Gov't Mule isn't far behind!
Please post reviews if you guys see the Brothers again!!!

After getting back into Gov't Mule I did a search and came across Bad Mofo's review of this gig. If BF is still around that concert and many others are legally available here.
