Re: Who Do We Think We Are : A Reappraisal
One of the great four. This one is as good as the others, you don't have to have Blackmore soloing all the time to have some great music...
Ian is fabulous at the start of place in line,
one of my fave moments on this record, hell, all of PIL is great.

In my opinion the critiques I've read here are mostly from people who's musical horizons don't expand beyond the hard riff rock stuff.
For me it's a musically diverse and emotional offering from the band! I consider this the bands best album though a couple others are tied.
No, I love lots of different types of music, from Abba to the Zombies!
I just love hard rock played by Purple, and this album didn't fit the bill.
People on here keep posting that the album is experimental, progessive, and then they say that this track and that track could've sat nicely on Fireball or whatever.

PIL, IMHO, is not a patch on Lazy, which is also a lengthy blues work out. Blackmore is on fire on Lazy, whereas he's asleep on PIL.
Blimey, I'm starting to sound like awiddlebored or Reborn Again, aren't I?

Yes you are... remember Blackmore is not the only member of this band.

Well, yes, I know that. But go and put on the album (perhaps listen to MH - Highway Star, lazy, Pictures Of home beforehand), then listen to that awfully weak, weedy uninspired effort of a solo on WFT, for example. It sounds to me like he dubbed it on when no one was looking!
Yes, Gillan is in great voice on the album, but, while I agree with your statement about him not being the only band member, I would still suggest when the only/lead guitarist in a hard rock band is emotionally and mentally 'awol', then you've got problems.

Depends which version of Lazy. The MIJ version has always been one of my top 10 Purple tracks. Not so keen on the MH version which to me sounds like two separate songs pasted together. PIL easily tops that one.

Re: Who Do We Think We Are : A Reappraisal
I listened to this last night and to my surprise thought it was brilliant! I remember when I bought the remastered edition a few years, I didn't think too much of it but last night that changed!
Generally I prefer the more experimental side of Purple - i.e. Fireball, Stormbringer, Purpendicular and (the mighty) Come Taste The Band - so it makes sense for me to like this album too!
Favourite track on the album is Our Lady. Some nice guitar playing from Blackmore there and Gillan's voice is great.

For me, either the MH or the MIJ version of Lazy blows PIL away completely. The riff, the soloing, the whole arrangement. Lazy was good enough to be a gig favourite for many years - for both the audience and the band. Does PIL ever get played these days. Maybe it should, as the vocal would suit Gillan nowadays, wouldn't it?
Dunno.
Anyway, it's all a matter of opinion and personal taste, isn't it?
PIL is a bit of a plodder to me

Our Lady sounds very Beatles inspired... doesn't it?

It may well be....doesn't sound like them to me, though!
Mind you, there aren't too many 'Hammond-soaked' Beatles tracks that spring to mind, and I'm sure MrEd would claim that Ringo couldn't have played the drums on that track.
Having said that, it sounds more like the Beatles than Speed King or Child In Time!
