Blackmore's Night at Burg Veldenstein 20/07/04 - A Complaint/Review

First off, I was so pissed off during the performance that I found it hard to enjoy and get into so this isn't really a review and not the kind of thing you'd take and put alongside other reviews on a website, (no names mentioned but you know who you are emoticon ).

This was the worst organised concert I have ever been to, the clowns responsible couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery, and the Blackmore's Night team did their part to spoil it as well.

I probably would have been able to overlook the shortcomings and enjoy myself under better circumstances but the organisation ruined it and it was so awkward that I left the place relatively near the front where I'd managed to get to and went to the back, away from the main crowd and picking out all the flaws throughout the rest of the gig.

There were so many negative things that I'll have to bullet-point them....

- The queue outside consisted of everyone sort of shuffling up the steep and increasingly narrow path to the gates and sort of hoping that they'd get to the front and have their tickets checked. Nothing marked out, nothing organised.

- Ushering was nonexistant.

- There were only enough seats for about half of the audience.

- The "seats" were benches with no spaces
marked and they were badly laid out.

- The big marquee with the sound desk in it was put up right up against the last row of benches and right in the middle of the field so everyone that was forced to stand was also forced to stand to one side in order to see anything at all. I saw Yes last week and the sound equipment was right at the back of the standing area so it didn't obstruct anyone's view, would it have killed them to show the same courtesy to the fans?.

- The courtyard was muddy, uneven and covered in straw.

- My special costume ticket and willingness to make an idiot out of myself supposedly guaranteed me a place within the first three rows but nothing was done to ensure this and I, along with quite a few more costumed people, ended up at the back and cheated out of what was promised...."Blackmore's Night appreciates all our fans that make the effort to dress up".....do they bollocks.

- Not only was nothing done to make sure the people that had ordered their tickets early and dressed up got what they were promised but there were an awful lot of people whose idea of "Renaissance Garb" was a Blackmore's Night t-shirt to go with their jeans. About 3 out of every 10 people that were sitting in the supposedly reserved rows weren't dressed up and there's no way the security and crew could have missed it yet they did fuckall and just let it happen.....BASTARDS!!!!!.

- They seem to have recruited the bar staff from the local McDonalds, the person that was serving me halfway through a multiple order buggered off after taking my money but not giving me all the drinks and I ended up paying for the same beer twice.

- There was a cameraman swinging a camera around on a long boom and it was coming dangerously close to people's heads.

- I don't know if it was because they were all as pissed off as I was but the audience contained some of the rudest people I have ever encountered...especially the twat who pushed me back from the front and was sitting in one of the reserved rows despite not being dressed up....ARSEHOLE!!!!!!.

The performance.....

- It's hard for me to give a fair evaluation of the performance, it wasn't bad but I don't think it was as good as the last time I saw them....certainly not worth the money or the journey though.

- Ritchie was playing alright, he was in a good mood but he did start acting a bit weird during the encores.

- Candice was dreadful, flat as a pancake all night and most certainly worse than the last time I saw her.

- The soundman seemed to know this and he was being very generous with the effects. There was so much reverb it was like she was singing down a well, the chorus unit was definitely turned on and I'm sure I heard some echo on Soldier of Fortune.

- Although I have a great deal of respect for anyone that can play the violin at a professional level, I don't think the new violinist is as good as the last one.

- Once In A Million Years was crap.

I don't think it was a bad concert but I didn't enjoy it by any means and I'll think twice before I pay to see Blackmore's Night again, I'm certainly not travelling for it.

Again?. emoticon

In the first encores he seemed a bit distant and then he cut Black Night short and left the stage, then he came back on, played the riff a few more times and stopped before picking up an acoustic and playing a Midwinter's Night/Dandelion Wine medley. It didn't seem like the rest of the band really knew what he was doing and it certainly confused the audience.

It's kinda hard to explain...it was just....erm....weird.

As I´ve said when he left after Black Night I saw that Sir Robert looked VERY confused and so did Candice as she went to look after him and then they went. When he came back he just played the riff(you know I and everyone else was expecting another song) while he several times put the strat over his head like we wanted to put it away and then he played the riff a few times more before he said:"Now, that´s it!" and put it away to play the last song of the night.

Sir Robert had absolutly no idea what to do during the Midwinter´s Night Dandelion Medley. He first put his bass away to pick up a guitar and then tried to play something before putting it away again(which he also didn´t really managed to do) and got his bass again to figure out a few quiet lines to do to the show closer.

Another thing that really annoyed me was that the techique never really seemed to work. Remember:

Ritchie: There´s no power
Candice: Oh, you do have power...isn´t it great to have power?(making "muscleman").
Ritchie holding his mandolin to his ears like he wanted to show that was the only way anyone could hear it...

Also he played Past Time With Good Company almost entirely with his back to the crowd before the roadie plugged another guitar in the amp before it at least halfway worked.

Except for Ritchie smiling really more than Morse did in Coburg, and joking around a lot with Candice his behaviour was as weird as the stage techique and the entire organisation, I thought.

The performance.....

1 b) Ritchie was playing alright, he was in a good mood but he did start acting a bit weird during the encores.

2 b) Candice was dreadful, flat as a pancake all night and most certainly worse than the last time I saw her.

3 The soundman seemed to know this and he was being very generous with the effects. There was so much reverb it was like she was singing down a well, the chorus unit was definitely turned on and I'm sure I heard some echo on Soldier of Fortune.

1 a) On the two BN gigs I´ve been everyone had the chance to be right up front, dressed up or not. I suggest people to boycott the dress up clownery, it just doesn´t make sense for anyone but Blackmore having a laugh...
2 a) The funniest thing about that bunsh of wankers was that at the time we stood there in the first place no one complained. At the time the announcer mentioned this everyone started yelling and saying very unnice things and started pulling...Really evertime the announcer said something they agreed to they made that stupid daily talk show applause and that yelling like a bunsh of braindead idiots what they really were.

1 b) Not that he performed without technical failures. I noticed several of those during his accoustic playing, while during the electric playing you of course can get away with that easier so I didn´t see anything about about that part which was the minor one...
2 b) Even my mother who only heard the last gig, said that. I thought it was more or less alright during the mainset(even if he incredibly struggled to hit the high notes in the chorus of the new song which was really boring...)but it got even worse with her during the encores where you could hear her problems with hardrock songs...
And did I mention that she´s got a lot of problems to keep with the timing? I mean of course you can´t always follow Blacker´s playing too easy but she´s got it wrong on several occasions as I noticed...
3 b) I heard lots reverb and many echoes not only during Soldier Of Fortune so the sound engineer did as much as possible without taking his microphone and saying:"Sorry, dear that really isn´t your day today!"

Overall I can´t add much more than what you wrote.

I'm sorry you had a bad show but not especially surprised. " The Stars are OUt the Magic is here ........." Bollocks if there ever was any magic it's long since gone an dnow it's jsut another day anotehr dollar.

I pleased to note that everyone here now agrees that Candice just can't sing ! I bet the bootleg from this one will tell a terrrible tale of appauling vacals and poor playing.

Here' a laugh, apparently it was all being filmed for the DVD wot a total joke.!

I wouldn´t say so categorically. She actually sounded quite good and clear when I saw them last year and I still think the same when I hear the bootleg.

However, there were three cameras I noticed, two on the side of the stage and one R´sH mentioned that I always felt it would hit me on the head...

But I do feel I won´t be on the DVD even if there was a full frontal shot done of me and Ritchie´s Hair...well, maybe in the Director´s Cut in the curiosities section...emoticon

I have read tons of bad reviews for Blackmore's Night but for some reason I still am INCREDIBLY excited to see them in September.

That's because you still beleive all the Hype and you are still part of "the magic". It'll wear off when you've had a bad gig and the whole experience has cost some money.
