Purple album special edition
Purple album gold edition
Just announced. The usual remix plus the Purple live tracks from the Purple tour live album plus Coverdales Purple audition tape and his demo's for the stormbringer album!
The real shame is that they didn't include the live tracks that were on the DVD but not on CD. i.e. You Keep On Moving, Lay Down Stay Down & Stormbringer.
Not sure I want to spend £20 on a remix plus a very old demo tape

I had always assumed that DC used the demo he recorded with The Government in 1971 or so to get the Purple gig so this is all stuff we haven't heard as far as I know.

And that's the only thing, that makes this offering interesting. I don't particularly like the "Purple Album", but those songs made me order it again ...

Exactly, Friedhelm! I'd love to hear the old recordings. Ian Paice claimed David's demo was a mess, sounded like they all were drunken. But a short part was so good that they wanted him to audition.

Re: Purple album special edition
I find it funny that the legend of David Coverdale centers around him being a studio novice by the time he auditioned for Deep Purple but between the Rivers Invitation demo, The Government and The Fabulosa Brothers we have three studio appearances from 1969ish-73ish. Haha

But I suspect on a fairly amateur level. I doubt there was a proper producer. Probably an hour in the studio, get the levels and record live. Demo's like this were used to get gigs in those days.

A new version of Soldier of Fortune has been released...
SOLDIER OF FORTUNE 2023
I think it sounds great... better than the version on the original album. Coverdale's voice sounds better here along with the arrangement which is great.
I also like the remix of Burn.

Re: Purple album special edition
Hmmm, doesn't really grab me I have to admit . For me, the string arrangement is too cheasy and David's voice has got kind of a slight metallic edge which doesn't really fit the melancholy of the song - at last to my ears.
I think I'll give this new edition of the Purple Album a miss although I'd like to hear the four songs he used for his demoes back when he was applying for Purple.

Re: Purple album special edition
Just heard the special edition. You gotta give it to DC with these editions ... he really tries to pack them full of stuff.
Whole thing is worth it for the demo. For what it's worth he doesn't sound drunk at all. Really liked the version of Everybody's Talkin' on first listen.

Re: Purple album special edition
I agree. I like it. The demos are pretty good as are the song ideas for Stormbringer. I also like the acoustic Holy Man and some of the remixes.
