Agreed but to my mind the drumming was a key factor - the Dowle versions sound limp but IP gave them back some welly and swing (and the swing was absent from the Whitesnake Purple Album!)

Blackmore is definitely the key ingredient in "Mistreated". In fact, it's the Rainbow versions that have always been my favorite because of Blackmore being at his absolute peak from '76-'78.

And that's the difference in tastes, I suppose. Ronnie, who I absolutely love, murdered the song to my ears, Plus Ritchie's aimless noodling, ruined the Rainbow version for me.
I do concur that the Whitesnake versions were a bit lacking, and the question of how much Bolin would have put into doing the song proper is a big ???

There was nothing aimless about Ritchie's playing during that period, or really anytime between '69-'78. In fact, the only time I would really consider his playing completely aimless was on the Perfect Strangers tour. He took his playing to the absolute limit nightly during the Dio-era Rainbow years.

I asked Glenn and Ian Paice about Comin Home. They said they NEVER performed Comin Home. (I have heard that some guy from Sheffield sometimes has some fun and likes to claim some things sometimes. BUT I don‘t know if that’s true.)

If you're referring to Simon Robinson, the head of the Deep Purple Appreciation Society, then you are dead wrong. He curated all of the post Purple release's (In Concert 70/72, Live in London 1974, Scandinavium Nights, On the Wings..etc etc - it's a long list. And these were always done with care and attention (sadly lacking from the band I might add) but the very odd error crept in. It's my belief that, in writing the sleeve notes, he mistook Homeward Strut for Comin' Home. Cock up not conspiracy. If it wasn't for Simon we wouldn't have much of the fantastic archive or early live performances.

I know all that and I have a lot of respect for him. Please, don‘t understand me wrong. I am not claiming that. As I wrote above I just heard that by some other serious fan, who is a DP collector since almost 50 years. I am not able to evaluate that. Thank you!
