Live is where the problems are.
In the studio, not only do they have the luxury of working out everything until it works, but they have also successfully morphed their style in a way that it reminds here and there of the old days but is better suited to their age. It’s not exciting, but classy, well-played rock.
This is something they cannot do live, because people want to hear the classics but also because, let’s face it, classics are way more exciting. It’s simply a different songwriting style that yields songs that are more interesting live. Mk Morse songs can be quite uninspiring live, because all the subtlety in the production goes away with poor acoustics and the details are lost. Plus, these songs tend to plod along if you take away Ezrin’s magic.
This to me is the problem, but as long as they record in the studio they are still top-notch, even if not exactly my cup of tea.
There is nothing can be done in the live department, unless you use an autotune, bring in a backup singer, use backing tapes, the instrumentation is still good, it is the best of Gillan at that age. Fans will still go to the venue.
But if they released a bad studio album, its not gonna be good in my opinion.
Imagine a bad album promoted with an average live performances. Thats a double whammy.
They have to deliver an album with at least 8/10 rating.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
I don't think a bad album would change anything. The sales would be strong for nowadays standards (just like the last 4 albums) because most albums are being sold in the first week so a "bad reputation" of an album wouldn't really affect its success. If ear music does a good advertising campaign, which is what they'll do, any album would be successful right now.
Still, most people who go to a concert don't know any of the albums Purple did after 1984 so I honestly think there would be no effect.
Yet I hope for a great album and I'm optimistic about it.

Do you really think thats the case ? I dont think so? most of the crowds for DP in the UK are similar age to myself (at least they were when i last extended some 10 years ago)and have followed them for many years, im quite sure they know they have released albums post 84 ??? After all who do you think is buying the albums that have sold quite well recently?Whilst im sure there is a certain amount of the crowd who are simply rock fans who attend for the name DP, i don't think its most of the crowd?

I'm no expert but don't you think success of the studio album affect the number of tour dates or the size of the venue?
I think they are still a big name in Germany partly because "Now What", "Infinite" and "Whoosh" hit #1 in the charts, even the cover album hit #5. It is an assurance that they will not play in small clubs here.
In UK the last two proper studio albums hit #6 and #4.

a good chart position does not translate to sales anymore.
The number of albums sold have been fairly consistent for quite some time, but as albums sales go down compared to before, the same amount of albums which gave you a, let's say #40 three decades ago, now puts you in the top 3
Varies a lot during the year as well

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
Well, you don't hear songs from Now What or Whoosh on the German radio.
So it's mainly the name Deep Purple which draws the crowds I'd say and not necessarily their latest record.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
I caught The Who a couple of weeks ago in Elmont, NY. Excellent show. Daltry worked hard to get his voice in good shape. Went to a doctor to have a procedure, followed his orders and took vocal training and it paid off big time. He's older than Gillan and sounded excellent. I agree with Light, here. Gillan never took care of his voice and never did what he was supposed to do, as what he did joining Sabbath. Hearing IG live now is an embarrassment. Paice still does a good job, as does Glover. I don't expect anything special from them these days. A good day for Gillan these days is still not very good. A steep, sad drop-off from the singer who got me into Deep Purple. Oy!

Don't know about most people, but I know the post 84 albums as well as the oldies. In fact, for the last few years now I've almost only listened to the Ezrin era, and those are the songs I look forward to hear live. Of course I don't mind the old favourites, but much of the new stuff I haven't heard live yet.
No matter how great Deep Purple was 50 years ago, I don't see them as a nostalgica act. As I said, I don't know about everyone else, but I don't think I'm all alone about that.
...
I see every reason to be optimistic about a new album, though I don't know much about McBrides songwriting abilities in this context. Looking forward to find out!

In that case they should make another cover album that is "Turning To Crime Vol 2" or a concept album? A christmas album? Some metal bands did it.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
Simon McBride is a very lucky young guitarist, from "obscurity" to "legendary". Wow!
