Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
I think their credibility is 100% intact. Not only this. I also think they are being a great example and inspiration in how to get old in rock music with dignity, positivity and realism. Kinda silly to expect them to sound like it's 1973 really. Really curious to see what they'll come up with McBride.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
I understand the people saying if DP want to continue then they should, and of course thats entirely up to them and if people still want to go and see that then good luck to them, but for me there comes a stage where age catches up and you just cant do it anymore and it all becomes rather embarrassing.Ian Gillan has been at that stage for many years now and Paicey quite simply does not perform to anywhere close to the levels he used to.Deep Purple were my favourite band for many many years but for me there is nothing left to get excited about, its just nostalgia.I also understand people saying you cant expect them to play like they did in 1973 but then they are still attempting to play most of their setlist from that era so comparisons are natural.Deep Purple for me created some of the most exciting rock music the world has ever heard they took virtuosity in rock music to levels never known before but that was 50 years ago and of course 2 off the main protagonists and creative forces are no longer in the band .I personally dont want to see a DP going through the motions with stand ins, its now a tribute act and not a very exciting one at that.Yes there are still 3 of the classic MK2 lineup there but they are nowhere even close to what they once were.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
Ian Gillan is the weakest link when it comes to "live performance", because of the age.
But for me "studio album" is more important at this point as long as they deliver a good studio albums, they can continue.
Band membership is also important for me, I don't want "unknown musicians" using Deep Purple as a step ladder to become famous. As for me the only way they can recruit an "unknown musician" is when a singer sounds very similar to Ian Gillan, just like when Journey recruited Arnel Pineda.
There are many franchise bands today! Quiet Riot with only Rudy Sarzo. YES. Hey Steve Howe, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman are still available.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
At present for me the important, best things for Deep Purple are:
1st. Studio Album (TTC is good, even for a cover album)
2nd. Band Membership (who's in the band)
3rd. Record Label Support (earMusic is good)
4th. Live Performances (because of age, I understand)
If the new gets a good support from record label, it will be success in Europe, just like the last three albums.
That's why the next album is the true test of Simon McBride, it will show his creatibity and if they deliver a stinker album, then replace Simon McBride. That's my opinion.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
That is your opinion and I do understand your point although I don't agree.
I just want to give Simon a fair chance and I hope they'll record something with him. Concerning his performance on stage, I like what I hear.

What an amazing guitarist. That guitar is hard to play.
The former Whitesnake, Alcatrazz, Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth and others.
I'm just imagining if he plays with the band.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
Live is where the problems are.
In the studio, not only do they have the luxury of working out everything until it works, but they have also successfully morphed their style in a way that it reminds here and there of the old days but is better suited to their age. It’s not exciting, but classy, well-played rock.
This is something they cannot do live, because people want to hear the classics but also because, let’s face it, classics are way more exciting. It’s simply a different songwriting style that yields songs that are more interesting live. Mk Morse songs can be quite uninspiring live, because all the subtlety in the production goes away with poor acoustics and the details are lost. Plus, these songs tend to plod along if you take away Ezrin’s magic.
This to me is the problem, but as long as they record in the studio they are still top-notch, even if not exactly my cup of tea.

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
I admit it's five years since I last saw them - Stuttgart un June 2017. And what shall I say - they blew me away!
I still remember the intro to Time for Bedlam, the deep bass making my trousers vibrate - and off they went. This was nothing plodding, this was a great start to a high energy show!
However, I also saw less-than-great shows like e. g. Regensburg in November 2013, but even then the majority of the audience was happy; so it can't have been incredibly bad.
So even today they are still able to deliver a breathtaking show - not as regular as they did in the 80's and 90's but they still are.
It's a huge difference whether you attend a show or whether you just sit in front of your TV and watch snippets on Youtube.
Looking forward to seeing Simon next week!

Re: Simon officialy joins Deep Purple
I know, and I have seen them quite a few times before COVID.
My opinion is that it is a very different show from what it used to be; still enjoyable, still great musicianship but most of the old songs don’t translate well at lower tempos and with limited mobility/showmanship. Go back even just to Live in Sydney from 1984 and take a look at Speed King towards the end of the show; that intensity is not even imaginable these days - and pls don’t think I am criticizing them, I am just stating the obvious given their age. All of them, despite what I am saying, are performing admirably for their age - dP, Coverdale, Hughes, Blackmore - all of them.

One of the few posts in this thread I totally agree with.
To all you critics, you're entitled to your opinions. And I'm entitled to disagree with you.
Writing this after seeing the band in Copenhagen last night. I believe this was for the 7th time. I have never been disaapointed, but still I must say, I've never seen the band more full of energy, sharper, focused, or happier doing their thing. It was like the youthness of McBride spread around the group and made everything sound fresher than in decades. As if they all profit on the bands lowered average age.
If there was one visible sign of old age, it was Mr Gillan walking like the aged man he is. But his singing was strong and precise, and impressive no matter age. If any 25 year old could sing like this, it would be equally impressive, only for different reasons.
Very interesting to hear McBride play Blackmore and Morse material with equal precision and affection. And also being able to put his own stamp wherever suitable. Impressive, and highly entertaining!
My compliments the my favourite band of all times, for once again renewing themselves, and bringing on a new member who seems impressivly perfect for the bill.
Given another chance, I'll LOVE to see mkIX again, anytime and hopefully soon. I cannot wait to hear a new album with this line up.
