I would pretty much agree with that statement. As great as RB was in MKII & III I agree he was better in Rainbow.
And I think that reformed DP were better in 96 WITH SM than the previous tours with RB, although NEC 87 was a great show. I still believe that RB was ruining DP before he left.

i kinda agree with that RB was bloody awful live post reunion apart from the TBRO tour were he decided to play again but of course he had decided time was up.
SM DP were more reliable and actually inspired for a few years then it went a bit cold post Abandon tour IMHO.

I didn't go to TBRO tour, I had sort of lost DP by this time
(JLT not the point of the reunion). I went Leicester de Montfort Hall for the 96 tour and absolutely loved it. I didn't miss RB at all.

Didn't go to TBRO tour either as they never played Scotland !!emoticon but the recordings and videos I've seen show Blackers in great form.
I went to see DP at Barrowlands Glasgow in 96 and they were brilliantemoticon but i did miss Blackmore as hes my favourite guitarist (when he can be bothered)

Re: DP guitarists

I never saw DP in the 70s but Rainbow in 1976 and 1977. Those where magical nights, IMHO the best concerts I’ve ever seen. I saw DP in the 80s, 90s, 00s, Whitesnake, Gillan but they never came close.
TBRO tour was musical more interesting, but the bad vocals and childish behavior ruined everything. The Satriani concert was promising, so was the Purpendicular tour.
But after that all started to fall apart.
Bolin was not a hardrock guitarist, but IMHO he fitted perfectly. CTTB also sounded fresh and they sounded like a band on fire. His solo records I love a lot and listen to regularly.
Morse was IMHO never a great fit. Not that I doubt his quality as a guitarist. Purpendicular was great, but after that I lost interest because to me it sounded much the same.
So for me the new guitarist doesn’t have to be a hardrock player, but someone who brings some fire back. But I think that will never happen.

Yes, I guess what p***** me off was that RB could still be astonishing when he could be bothered. I have heard loads of recordings from TBRO Tour and musically they are incredible, but unfortunately I can't get past the really terrible vocals.
I saw DP at Leicester de Montfort Hall on the Purpendicular tour and it felt really fresh, and of course missed RB but the new man was great as well.

The TBRO tour is nearly 30 years ago now. I feel those days are gone. The shame is that after a fairly lacklustre (to say the least) mid 80's he was very firey from '88 to the last tour with Dougie. Could have done with at least 5 more years of that rather than lute playing nonsense

I'm not looking for an argument but the evidence from the bootlegs that I have is that post the "mixing" of Nobody's Perfect Blackers really started to clean up his sound and playing (and there's evidence that that started from Sept '87) to the extent that by '88 he was nearly back at his best (Copenhagen '88 for example). His playing was clean and fluid for S&M tour but the deficiencies elsewhere mean that this era is often not considered when debating Blackers.

Yes to be fair he was decent on the S&M tour but JLT stopped any real enjoyment of that show for me. emoticon

The tour of '88 is quite interessting not only because of Ritchie playing better than before but also because of Gillan's voice being waaaaaay better than he'd been in '85 or '87
