Re: Steve bows out for good :(
I would "not" call this lineup the Ian Gillan Band or the Don Airey Band, but would you???
#1
Ian Gillan
Jeff Beck
Roger Glover
Don Airey
Ian Paice
#2
Ian Gillan
Joe Satriani
Roger Glover
Don Airey
Ian Paice
But would call this the Ian Gillan Band.
Ian Gillan
Simon McBride
Roger Glover
Don Airey
Ian Paice
But thats just me.

Re: Steve bows out for good :(
Jeff Beck is obviously not going to join Deep Purple and also I think this talk of the band being 'the Ian Gillan Band' does a massive disservice to Roger Glover and Ian Paice who have given as much to the band over the years as Ian Gillan, and is quite disrespectful to them as musicians and as key members of Purple.

Ah, I get it now, so if Gillan left this lineup, it would be the Jeff Beck Group right?

Re: Steve bows out for good :(
It would not be the Gillan Band, but there is something to this…I mean, for us fans the band was characterized in many ways: for some, the key element were the duels between Ritchie and Jon, for others it was the interplay between “3 soloists”, including Paice, for others it was the dual leadership of Gillan and Blackmore, with their duels on and offstage.
With Morse on board the dynamics changed, but there was still a heavy instrumental counterpoint to the singer, who is in most cases the key element in a band. Now, with Lord replaced by a brilliant but waaay less charismatic Airey, and with Steve gone, Gillan is clearly the central point of the band for everyone outside of us diehards and there is no balance. Does not turn this into IGB, but perhaps into something less interesting. All theory thus far, let’s see if they record anything.

Re: Steve bows out for good :(
Actually - I saw Jeff Beck few weeks ago and I cant imagine him playing with Deep Purple. He is obviously great guitarist, but sorry to say - zero charisma. He is almost Eric Clapton type of coldness.

I'm just using Jeff Beck as an example, he will not join DP, just an example of a famous guitarist who insist his ideas, Gillan and the rest cannot bully him in the studio.

Just being Jeff Beck gives you all the charisma you need.

You are very lucky to see one of the legendary Yardbirds guitarist. My advise to you is to take pictures and in the future show that to your sons or grandsons and says I attended that concerts.
Zero charisma?! Many dudes will say I should have seen Jeff Beck while I still have the chance, while he is still alive.

I find that quite astonishing that you mention Becks lack of charisma when you are such a big fan of SM and DA ? who great players that they are have the charisma and stage presence of curtains !!! To be fair SM is a smiley curtain

Steve has tons of charisma and is very connected with crowd! Don does many unmusical things and jokes I do remember from shows - like his little pirouette during Well Dressed Guitar or prettending "hand poker face" thing when he sometimes makes a mistake. Its about connection on stage. I remember his comical facepalm during Lazy introduction where he made a funny flaw which caused Roger and IP laugh on stage....
In terms of classic "rock guitar star" charisma - noone (and I really mean NOONE) beats Tony Iommi. When I saw Ritchie with BN in 2006 and with Rainbow 2018 - my impression from him was "such a weirdo....". In one moment he is sweeping stage with broom (on Blackmore´s NIght gig) in comic way.... in other moments he looks anger when he leaves stage after ending set with SOTW abruptly (Prague Rainbow gig).
