DP guitarists

I will only count the guitarists that have actually recorded with DP so basically Blackers ,Bolin and Morse

My opinion for what its worth is that all 3 of them peaked whilst outside of DP.

ie Blackers prime for me was Dio era Rainbow!
although he was truly awesome and fundamental to DPs succes, for me his playing and inventiveness peaked in Rainbow

Tommy recorded the wonderful CTTB album with DP but his work outside of DP was even better IMHO

Steve did a great job in DP but again his best work is outside of the confines of DP

thoughts anyone?

Re: DP guitarists

I pretty much agree litb. Luckily DP had the Great Jon Lord and almost as great Don Airey to work with their guitarists. When it comes to Keyboard/Guitar Combo (In any band) nothing will ever beat the Lord/Blackmore Combo, especially live IMHO!

But I would say Deep Purple have always been more than pure "sum" of five. emoticon So it doesnt matter where guitar player shined more or less....

im not sure i understand that statement ptr?
surely Deep Purple ARE the sum of the five?
ie they were always a "band" unlike say Whitesnake who were DCs baby and Rainbow who were of course RBs baby.

I would pretty much agree with that statement. As great as RB was in MKII & III I agree he was better in Rainbow.
And I think that reformed DP were better in 96 WITH SM than the previous tours with RB, although NEC 87 was a great show. I still believe that RB was ruining DP before he left.

i kinda agree with that RB was bloody awful live post reunion apart from the TBRO tour were he decided to play again but of course he had decided time was up.
SM DP were more reliable and actually inspired for a few years then it went a bit cold post Abandon tour IMHO.

I didn't go to TBRO tour, I had sort of lost DP by this time
(JLT not the point of the reunion). I went Leicester de Montfort Hall for the 96 tour and absolutely loved it. I didn't miss RB at all.
