Ronnie Romero

Been listening to the new Schenker album which is ok,mad Mike is still a brilliant player though some of the songs are somewhat euro rock by numbers.
The question I have is ,does anyone else find Romero kinda generic and annoying ? Yes he can sing and can do a decent dio copycat, but he's not really my cup of tea I much prefer msg with doogie white or indeed robin mcauley . Romero is more tribute act than a star himself .Thoughts anyone ?

Re: Ronnie Romero

I don’t blame him as he has to make a living, but it in my view after Rainbow he did a bit too many projects and came across as a hired hand rather than someone with his own personality. I understand that this is the nature of today’s music business, where you need multiple revenue streams to survive unless you are a star, but still it has hurt his profile.

Re: Ronnie Romero

I have liked the last couple of Schenker releases but he is getting too predictable now, unfortunately. The songs on Universal are "by the numbers" as well. A step down in quality from previous releases.

Re: Ronnie Romero

I moderately enjoy the last Schenker albums, mainly because I grew up with the sound of his guitar and I love him so much but, yes, songwriting is a bit by the numbers.
Reading his interviews and reading between the lines, I understand the problem lies in how he composes his songs nowadays: he's not really writing songs, rather he records riffs, guitar parts and solos then sends it all to Michael Voss with the job to assemble proper songs with the material and to coordinate the addition of drums, bass and vocals. They don't play together and Michael has no interest in lyrics ("singers always talk about love anyway"!), he just wants to play. If you notice, songs in recent albums rarely have proper endings, they just stop. They are assembled rather than composed. I'm not sure this is a good way to obtain excellence. Still, the music is enjoyable because he is such a talented guitarist.

Yes, but his tone is not what it once was nor his dexterity. Compare to his playing on the McAuley Schenker albums, for example. Granted, it was 30 years ago.

Re: Ronnie Romero

Romero is quite one dimensional, yes. Jorn is a much more dynamic singer, by comparison, having the power of DC of old, while still having his own flair. His weakness is his lack of stage presence which has probably prevented him from joining the big league.

Back to your question: I think he is a decent singer and credit to him for being the only one showing a bit of convinction in the last Rainbow shows. This being said, he's not above a mediocre cover bands level: check out the last Schenker shows where the same songs were sung by Robin McAuley in April/May and then by Romero in the June festivals (Graspop, Hellfest). That's the difference: Romero is often flat, not always in tune, often waning.

Nothing wrong with Romero's singing at Hellfest. Rather the oppsite. He mananges to cover both Barden and Bonnett territory quite comfortably. And I have to take my words about Schenker back. Nothing wrong with his fluency here either. He's still as sharp as ever, just a little less attack in his soloing style compared to say 1981 emoticon Imagine if RB held himself to the same high standard on the Memories in Rock tours... Both in terms of his playing and the band members selected.
