Re: Mark IX?
There will bei no Mk IX. Covid-19 has made that even more unlikely.

At the time of the reunion, the music industry was at its height. Album sales were the key, that is where the money was - hence, a safe (and great) album in PS, and then a not-so-safe-and-not-as-great follow-up. But it was the huge relevance of studio albums, that cost them the long intermission between the two, because it was imperative to make the best possible album. From there, it went downhill because, at the same time, people both got tired of DP as a brand and record sales dropped (and in the beginning everyone saw their own sales diminishing, and not the market in general), and DP as a consequence were mightily confused. They had been signed by the label to be a huge cash-cow, and there must have been major pressure on them not to spread their wings, but to bring in the darn sales. Let's not forget they got dropped by multiple labels during the time from 1984 to now. Hence the many changes that did not resolve anything...until Ritchie left, and without him, they could settle into a nostalgia act touring endlessly, with the occasional record (have you noticed how many more studio albums Ritchie has released over the same time span? There are clearly different priorities).
And no, I don't think the current members will continue once someone (Steve) finally has the guts to call it quits - and he can do it relatively lightheartedly because it's only partially his story, his life, his career.
On the other hand, Glenn...;-)
The problem was not striking when the iron was hot. Too much dilly-dallying around with HOBL. It should have been released at the end of 1985 or January of '86. They lost all their momentum and Ritchie's broken finger just when things were starting to heat back up put the kibosh on them. HOBL hade excellent tunes brought down by poor production. They shot themselves in their own foot because of this. Too bad.

Three years on and two more albums from this discussion, does anyone think there will ever be another lineup change? The current lineup are now coming up for their twenty year anniversary together.
I hope not. I can only wish for the current line up to keep it up, with sixth member Bob Ezrin pulling faders and helping out any way (only) he know how.
The first two albums from mkVIII was fairly succesful attempts to keep the purple spirit alive, but after that lenghty break and with mr Ezrin onboard, Deep Purple has once again turned into a true progressive, sophisticated, interesting, ground breaking act, creating music for a new millenia. The past do no more hold them back, and nothing else for that matter. This line up cannot be improved, all there is to hope for is that they keep going for years to come.

I believe there's gonna be a Mark 9 in the future.

Happy New Year to all.

Who do you think will leave for there to be a new lineup?

Re: Mark IX?
There is no reason for Mk9. As I repeatedly say Mk8 is the final one.

Simon McBride would be a likely replacement for Steve, as he haa already worked live with Gillan and Don Airey.
As discussed on the other thread about 'power' in DP, it seems that the band need to have at least three members of Mark 2 or 3 to go out under the name so that would suggest they could only survive a lineup change if it is Steve or Don going. They did play a few concerts with Nick Fyffe substituting for Roger though.
As to whether they should continue, I enjoyed them live for the first time last year after being a fan for a long time and they were brilliant so if there's still an audience out there for them, which in Europe at least there definitely is, I see no reason why they shouldn't keep going. However the idea of a one off gig or small tour which wraps things up with special guest former members makes a lot of sense too. These guys are in their seventies now and it must be close to time to finish.
Thought that Simon McBride would be the most likely replacement for Steve Morse when we were discussing potential lineup changes here a few years ago. Hopefully it's just a temporary replacement though. Guess we're not calling this this Mark IX though?

Re: Mark IX?
I wouldn't say so, we should remember that Nick Fyffe did quite a few shows with Purple as a replacement as well.

Re: Mark IX?
Becoming a bit like the original concept of Roundabout.
In the space of 5 gigs, 3 different line-ups. In their only gig in 2020 Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater filled in for Don Airey.

Re: Mark IX?
I'm glad this is only temporary situation, I'm hoping that Steve Morse will return soon and his wife beat that cancer.
I'm not familiar with Simon McBride, I believe he is in the same record label with Deep Purple. Thank you Simon for helping the band.
Joe Satriani and Ritchie Blackmore are also label mates with Deep Purple.
