Rate Rainbows Bass players
So who was the best Bass player in Rainbow ? there were a few good ones, Daisley and Glover had song writing skills along with being good musicians but from a technical view who was the best player in the bands history ?

Re: Rate Rainbows Bass players
From a technical standpoint it would be:
1. Bob Daisley (perfect mix of technique and melodic feel)
2. Craig Gruber (great player with a funky touch, bass lines would be a litte too busy for RISING style material though)
3. Roger Glover (not quite as adventurous as the first two, but still brings it with a strong sense of melody and aggression where needed)
4. Greg Smith (good, solid player from what I can hear of his playing on STRANGER)
5. Jimmy Bain (probably the least from a technical standpoint, but he's actually my favorite because he still holds it all down well and has a very heavy sound that was perfect for RISING and the '76 tour)

And on a further note, a CD of RISING with the LA mix is essential to hear what Bain truly brought to Rainbow.

Re: Rate Rainbows Bass players
Right you are Kinski! The Bass is much more up front!!
As for ranking Players for Rainbow, I'd say Craig Gruber, Roger Glover, Bob Daisley, Jimmy Bain and Greg Smith. They were all great as far as I am Concerned.

Re: Rate Rainbows Bass players
Both Smith and Bain were very good backing singers. Daisley is ok but Roger in the words of JL "can't sing" even though he did when Bonnet was in the band and it was awful at times

Re: Rate Rainbows Bass players
all of them very good in their own way, with different strengths.
I'll say this though; the combination of playing / singing goes to Greg Smith, nobody else comes close

Re: Rate Rainbows Bass players
I think that Bob Curiano doesn't deserve to be completely ignored. And there was another bass player on the Long Live Rock'n'Roll album ...

Re: Rate Rainbows Bass players
IMO the rhythm section for the 2016 gigs was the worst RB has ever played with. They may be ok in BK but it's awful for the Rainbow stuff.

Mark Clarke is my favorite. Unfortunately they did not record with him.

You can hear his bass work on disc two of the Deluxe edition of LLRnR on "Kill the King". That was the only track he laid down during his stay in the band. His bass is much too busy for that one, and I think Daisley did a better job on the finished product.
I love Clarke in the band Tempest though. Great stuff there! And his bass on Uriah Heep's "Why?" from the DEMONS AND WIZARDS sessions has to be heard to be believed what an awesome player he is.
