Re: LLRNR

I actually rate the album higher now, years later, than when I bought it on release. For me there's two weaknesses in particular -- the production just seems flat, with limited range and dynamics. RB's guitar, as so often, gets buried. To be fair, I think the production on a lot of the Rainbow stuff after the debut is sort of a product of its time and not great (Rising has a super thin production too I think).

The other is the opener/closer. I cannot stand Rainbow Eyes, it's dire and I with it off every time. And I never cared for LLRnR -- I know RB wanted to get a hit but that was a bone-headed effort at creating a singalong at a time when it seemed punk was overtaking rock. Throw in a light brown sleeve with a badly faked crowd pic in the gatefold and you have to wonder what they where thinking.

In between, I find the rest of the tracks are strong (Sensitive to Light is possibly a weak one) but I really still enjoy Lady of the Lake, LA Connection, The Shed etc...hard driving guitar based rock with the best Rainbow vocalist on form. Agree the keyboard side is lacking. Still, for all the faults, I'll take it over anything from the JLT era.

Good album but not as good as Rising or the first album. GoB and KtK are big faves of mine, the rest are decent songs. DislikedLLRnR when it was new, but think it is quite good now. A singalong number.

Martin Birch was always a really good engineer. I bet a re-mix and re-master would really lift the sound - if the masters still exist. Sadly I doubt this will ever happen since the deluxe edition has been released. if the masters do exist they would be very revealing about who contributed what to the final version.

I'd like to hear a 5 CD release, each CD being specially remastered by the band members but unfortunately this can never happen RIP Cozy and Ronnie
