Hugely disappointing reunion performances where the band appeared to be has beens living of past glories.
Given that they were all only around 40 when they reunited its disappointing to me that they couldn't recreate the glory years though they did come close on the TBRO tour (Gillan apart)
Compare it to say Maidens reunion when Bruce rejoined after a 6/7 year spell away and Adrian almost 9 years away and those guys too were nearly 40 at that time and they were bloody awesome and continue to be to this day.
Why did the DP guys lose so much so relatively young is a question that i ask to this day??

You are correct as usual, for the most part, light. There were some excellent performances where they were smokin'. I caught a couple of them. There are too many instances on YouTube, though, where they, especially Gillan, just seemed a bit off. I think that when Gillan performed well, RB seemed to play at another level, mostly in the early-to-mid stages of the PS tour. They were also really firing on all cylinders on the HOBL tour before Ritchie busted his finger. One thing, during the entire time of the reunion, you could count on Lord, Paice and Glover to be on their A-game. Blackers seemed to play more inspired when they were playing the new tunes rather than the MKIIa stuff. Speed King seemed to be an exception and DTC never disappointed. I will always agree about Gillan. When he stayed within his capabilities, he sounded good. When he tried to be MKIIa Gillan is when things seemed to fall apart. His normal tone was fine. He could have eased up on the higher, screaming stuff and everything would have been better. Oh, well. emoticon

Purple never had the Kiss or Ozzy factor and they lost their North American fans probably because of this. And losing so many fans is not good. I think they have done well in other parts of the world.

Biased as i may be, i consider DP as the best band of all time. At 17-20, drinking with buddies n' trying to get girls in the mood, LZ definitely took the cake. But they had a lot more "misses" than DP, imo.

I have and always will prefer The Kinks to The Beatles, though as i've gotten into my 40s, i've come to appreciate the Beatles for their groundbreaking influence (George Martin was a genius) on music in general.

On the Springsteen note, i've ignored, if not downright detested his music for decades (all i could think of when someone raved about him was that dopey "Dancing In the Dark" video where he pulled the Friends' chick up onstage). But then someone took me to see him live and he was AWESOME! 3.5 hours of rockin n rollin n fan interaction that was unparalleled in my vast concert going experience. Even "Dancing In the Dark kicked arse live!! I've since seen him live 4 times, the last concert clocking in at over 4 hours.i've gotten his complete catalog and, yes, there are some misses. But there's an awful lotta solid hits. I'm proud to now say i'm a big fan. Maybe it's a Jersey thing.

Never really got into The Stones or The Who, though i still rate the Steel Wheels tour gig as my single fave concert of all time. Give me Rush over either of them.

I think that Purple shot themselves in the foot. They dithered around getting HOBL out, when it should have been released in 1986 while they were on top. When everything started taking off as the HOBL tour progressed, Blackers busts a finger. Striking when the iron was hot would have kept them going in the eyes of the public here in the USA. History would have changed, I'm sure, had they released HOBL in 1986. emoticon

I agree. In the States HOBL was getting much airplay and was high in the charts where I live. Once RB broke his finger and the rest of the tour was cancelled, airplay stopped and the album went down the charts quickly.

I pretty much agree with your opinions on the Stones, Zep and the Who LakeGeneva. My favorite period of the Stones is the Mick Taylor Era and the Brian Jones period is a very close second. Zep, and especially the Who, were very over rated. To me, the most over rated rock and roll artist of all time is Bruce Springsteen. Boring!!! (IMHO).

I can't really agree on those bands being over-rated. In the case of Zep, over-hyped and over-exposed, maybe. Never got to see Zep. Had our tickets for the Detroit show at the Silverdome, but Bonham drank himself to death and that was the end of that. The Who and the Stones are quite excellent live and in the studio, produced some really excellent albums and a few OK ones, but their output was quite prolific. You can expect a few duds in there, but, overall, mostly top-notch. Springsteen, kind of like Phish, Dave Matthews, the Dead and those kind of groups, you either like him or you don't. Saw him once when he was just starting to get big. Fine show, but once was enough. Over-rated? Nah. Over-hyped, absolutely.

I don't think there is any evidence to suggest that Blackmore's playing on the PS tour is in anyway related to how IG sang on any particular night.

In every recording I have of the PS tour Blackmore's playing is a million miles away from ANY performance from the 1970's

It has become excepted fact, principally because of quotes from the band, that prior to Blackers breaking his finger the band was on fire and after, the mojo had gone.

The evidence of the recordings tells a very different story.
Nobody's perfect is comfortable the worst MK11 live recording-even when put up against PS Live & Knebworth where Blackers' tone is horrible. There are a number of soundboard boots from late 87 & 88 and they are all of a band near its peak. And some Aud recordings which confirm this; Verona 87 & Copenhagen 88 for example - Verona having the best reunion CIT with both IG & RB absolutely nailing it.

Correct re evidence. Wasnt the verona Child in time on NP?

Wanted to add for me its not a competition, there's no best or winner.

Re RB playing vs 70s. It was completely different in the 80s, more gain, more legato, more sloppy, but in some ways more melodic. For example SKOW and KAYBD on the early Australian dates 1984.
