Re: Man Alive

I have to agree with lightintheblack0, except for it's not simple.

I'm not much into ELP style or prog rock, but the guitar solo of Steve Morse is better than in "Throw My Bones".

I still don't remember much of the song, even though I listen to this 5 or 6 times already. emoticon

Because this carry the powerful name of DEEP PURPLE, I will do my best to like this one.

I want DEEP PURPLE to return to real hard rock and heavy metal. Why can't they add another real hard rock guitarist in the band? I mean Iron Maiden have three guitarists.

Still it will not changed my plan of buying 2 copies of "Whoosh!" in vinyl format and 1 copy in CD format. Why, because it's a DEEP PURPLE aibum.

Really? Did i not recently start a thread about my new found appreciation of the Mk Morse albums? What I have posted about the 2 new tracks is my honest opinion ie they dont match up to the standard of the last 2 albums, hopefully the rest of the album is better ? Time will tell

I have had a Gillan track buzzing around in my head once i heard "man alive" and I couldn't think which it was but this morning it came to me "for your dreams" it must have been the double tracked vocals that made me think of it because the actual songs are very different but in a way similar in their themes. Of course in those days Gillan had the ability to attack with his vocals and steps it up in a couple of places which I think is the problem with man alive.

The intro alone will make all "metalheads" run away, spitting and cursing in their stupidity.. ha ha ha

Don't really see the connection? For Your Dreams is a brilliant track,in fact Future Shock is a brilliant album,I loved the Gillan band albums, still do actually and was listening to Glory Road this morning.

Are "metalheads" stupid then ??Think most of us on here could be described as metalheads to a certain extent? we all seem to like a similar group of bands and type of music.
I would never claim to be a genius ,far from it ,but stupid ??? emoticon

I think that it´s mainly about the fact that we all love the same band because of different reasons. My opinion - "Highway Star" Deep Purple fans will not get it (I mean those who considers Highway Star as ultimate song which defines DP). And as I saw reactions, I think I have been right. For me, Highway Star is interesting and important part of their catalog, but actually minor. Both new songs go perfectly in current DP identity, which is of course, very different to "Highway Star" type of simple straightforward rock stuff. There is one part of Man Alive about which I had to think for a while and then I got it - it´s like pure Fools (transition part before 2nd speaking part with Roger´s bass) - how they did it live in early 00s! BTW - orchestral layer in Man Alive is beautiful!

Re: Man Alive

When I first listened to Man Alive I didn't really get it and I have to admit that I was a bit dissapointed. Then a strange thing happened, I felt the urge to listen to it over and over again which wasn't the case with "Throw My Bones" at all. I liked "Throw My Bones" at once but I soon had the feeling I knew every detail of the song. As I said, I was listening to "Man Alive" all the time yesterday and now I just love it. It's somehow heavy, it's dark, mysterious and very progish, actually it's the logical next step after Uncommon Man and Time For Bedlam.

I agree with ptr that it's a matter of which song in the Purple catalogue you define as your point of reference. "Man Alive" surely isn't in the tradition of Speed King, Highway Star, Mad Dog or Hell To Pay, but it has its fathers in the Purple catalogue. Actually Fools is a very good comparison.
