Well, Blackmore wasn't the only writer of the band and Lord wasn't either, in fact we all know that Lord didn't cuntribute as much to the compositions after In Rock, although he was essential for the arrangements and the sound. The main writing team of Mk II (after 1984 as well as before 1973) consisted of Blackmore (music), Glover (music, lyrics) and Gillan (lyrics).
So comparing Jagger/Richards and Blackmore/Lord is hilarious really.
The contributions of Glover and Gillan just can't be ignored. Take Speed King, that's a Glover Riff, same with Into The Fire or Maybe I'm A Leo.

2006 was when Gillan was 61 years old and he was on top of his game back then, physically and vocally. He lost his high mids around 2009, 2006 was part of his (last) vocal prime.

Eh ?

And there goes another thread derailed by lightintheblack to the same old same old tirade about how he liked them til 1998 but now Maiden are better...zzz.
I have a question if you want to stay in this particular thread: which two songs would you choose to replace Hushblacknight for the next shows. Otherwise open a specific thread to discuss the merits of Maiden compared to the touring DP band.

I'd choose Fools and Speed King in a tuned down version.

@VleeMouse: Eh?

I saw Maiden on their recent tour and it was boring as f*ck. More like a pantomime.

Really ?? ive no answer to that other than we all like different things emoticon
Maiden have always had a bit of the theatrical even at times cartoon like thing going on but ive NEVER found them boring .They are a hugely talented group of musicians who have never dropped their standards to this day.

Indeed the world would be very boring if we all liked the same things. Twas only the third time i'd seen Maiden (the others being 1980 & 1983) and it being the "greatest hits" tour was expecting something special. What it felt like to me was essentially the same song (multiple time changes in virtually every song) with solos that were essentially the same irrespective of who the guitarist was. I did wonder what Purple would have been like mind, if Gers had been recruited! As Morse himself has said- he's not the greatest performer on stage (mind you Blackers isn't either these days)

I'd somehow agree if you were talking about Gillan in 2019, although I still like his voice now, but in 2006 he hadn't really lost a lot. In my eyes, his best period after the seventies was the period between 2002 and 2008, because he had a very clean and powerful voice, he could have easily done CIT back then. Listen to his vocal performance on Bananas or ROTD, to the NEC show in 2002, the Machine Head shows in 2004 or to a 2006 (not Montreux) gig. In my eyes, he was on fire.
The problems with breath and power began, when he lost a lot of weight in 2007 and 2008, since then he hasn't been able to give the very high notes the power he used to. Nevertheless, he can hit them.

if thats what you think then yes your correct theres no point continuing this discussion Gillan hasn't been able to do justice to CIT since the 70s!! emoticon

Oh no, not even more downtuning, please. It's horrible enough that they destroyed Perfect Strangers that way. If Gillan can't sing them in the original key any more, take other songs.

oh dear here comes the thread police emoticon
you know what is boring though discussing the monotonous encores of a touring band of a once truly great rock act who have been nothing more than a tribute act for decades .in all honesty it would have been better if the reunion had never happened NONE of the band members ever really recovered their standard set in the 70s.

Indeed it's an interesting question what's more boring: getting the same encores for 15 years or the same forum debates for 15 years. emoticon
