Daniel- I don't think there are many of us who post here who would deny that DC's voice is not in great shape. It's been one of the most prominent discussions over the last 10 years or so, and I think it's almost beyond debate now.

It is what it is and shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who buys a ticket for a WS show nowadays. The notable thing with all the online comments about DC's voice is the vast majority are not from people who have attended the shows. And there still seem to be a lot of people who are enjoying the gigs regardless of DC's voice limitations.

The majority of complainers don't have a life. Sit in front of a computer/mobile and just bitterly complain about everything.[/quo

Bang on with that comment.

I’ve been a fan of DP and WS (and Rainbow, and...) since I was 12. Unfortunately, I was too young to attend any live gigs from the 70s and 80s, but I caught every chance to see DC live after that. When WS reformed in early 2000s, I was thrilled and the live gigs in the first decade of this millenia were great. DC’s vocal was still strong and a treat to listen to. For me personaly, he is one of greatest rock singers of all time (together with Gillan, Dio etc., I never liked Hughes so much although he has grown on me in the last years. Never much cared for Robert Plant either, which hasn’t changed).

Unfortunately, years of strain of performing (coupled with lifestyle) damage the vocal chords and DCs vocal if far from what it used to be. To me, the albums are also declining in quality, really good, memorable songs are few and far between. The last live gig I went to was on The Purple Tour, but this year I decided not to go, despite many of my friends persuading me to. Flesh and Blood did not make a very good impression on me (first WS album that I stopped listening after a couple of runs, although in hindsight Good to be Bad and Forevermore were not much different), and after watching youtube videos of the early gigs it was obvious DCs voice was/is shot. I think that there is a real effort to disguise that with other members vocal contributions and lower volume of Coverdale’s voice, so when you are standing in the front rows it is harder to notice than when listening on youtube. Plus, the atmosphere is always great on WS gigs and fun is guaranteed.

But, to be frank, the real magic of WS for me was always Coverdale’s singing. With this lost to such a degree, it seemed there is no reason to see them live anymore. Better keep the good memories. I have no regrets for not going this time around, even though it might have been the last chance. It’s the same reason I’m not going to DP shows anymore for quite some time now. The magic is gone, they are still capable musicians (Paice especially, Gillan’s voice is terrible). If I only had a time machine.

Exactly. With DC's voice gone, one might as well go watch a Rock of Ages style band performing WS's music as a tribute? What's the difference?

If you don't like songs like Heart of Stone, Hey You or Can't do Right, then you don't really like WS at all..
And these are among quite a few great songs on F&B. IMHO.

We each have our own taste I suppose... I don’t like SotT album either, and 1987 is also not among my favorites. Heart of Stone is IMHO the best song on F&B and there are a few others that are quite good, but somehow the wanting to listen to them just isn’t there. As for not liking WS at all, that is a statement that would require you to see inside my head or at least know me well, I suppose. Such statements really do nothing to further conversation and just show your inability to accept that anyone can have an oppinion different to yours. It reads suspiciousely like “If you don’t agree with me, you are not one of us!”. Not a good way to think ad act IMHO.

I agree with you to a large extent. I first saw WS in 1981 and my biggest regret is that I wasn't old enough to have seen them in 1978-1980! I saw WS at least once on every UK tour after that up until the Purple Tour which I missed due to a work emergency.

I do like a number of tracks on Flesh and Blood, but I'm undecided as to whether to buy a ticket if WS do tour the UK next year. I don't feel any huge sense of connection to any of the current members of the band although they are all decent players and are doing a good job of presenting WS music. The bottom line is that the reason I have been a fan of the band for so many years is because I think DC had an incredible voice. Coupled with his charisma and stage presence (as well as a brilliant band), there wasn't anyone in the same league (IMHO) in the early to mid 80's. With the voice gone, then all that's left for me is seeing DC on a stage (because there can't be many more tours), and hearing the songs performed live one more time. I'd be going in the knowledge that I'm going to hear a pretty ropey vocal performance and when the singer is the reason you're into the band, then that's an issue. I suspect I will buy a ticket but fully understand why you didn't.

And for what it's worth, I also agree very much that we all have different ideas on what makes a great WS song. Personally, I think Hey You is a really mediocre song, but respect that others may think it's wonderful. That's the beauty of music- some songs appeal to some people and not others.
