Are there any experts here?

Jon was able to write music for an entire orchestra. When doing this, does he write the music for each type of musical instrument? It boggles my mind how hard this must be.

He was a classically trained man, so he knew how to write a score. This means he did write basically all the instruments. It does take not only time but a trained ear/mind to put all those instruments to work together for a piece of music.

Many pop and rock writers write at least the basic stuff for each instrument - and the lead vocal - otherwise its very difficult to imagine the overall idea.

I know several electro music people, they praise the possibilities the computer brought, as you can just do a loop of the backing and then try anything over it. Lord had a bit more work there, he did it the traditional way. Must have consumed a lot of paper writing the whole thing!

Frank Zappa was able to do it too...it just baffles my mind. If those two ever really had a chance to sit down and talk, I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall. The genius in those two.

Re: Are there any experts here?

Jon always orchestrated all of his pieces himself. He took the study of orchestration very seriously indeed and worked all his life to improve on his understanding of it. He had a very distinctive way with the orchestra, and you can hear how much he learnt and continued to grow in those pieces he wrote in the decade after he left Deep Purple. One of the things that endeared him to orchestras was that they could see how well-written everything was, and he was also often to be found speaking to the players getting tips on how to do things. (The LSO harpist gave his some especially valuable tips on how to write for the harp.) Among the many things about him that I miss are the frequent phone calls while he was orchestrating something, along the lines of "this may be a stupid question but...." Of course it never was a stupid question.

Paul,

Are you able to tell us whether there is any unreleased material which may yet see the light of day?

I'm thinking in particular of some of the work Jon and Steve Balsamo did for "Songbook" ( in addition to ATYA and Northern Lights ) and the promised Hammond Organ Concerto?

Any announcements likely?

Thanks
Richard
