Deep Purple always makes good musiv, all lineups creates good music.
Purpendicular is still the best Morse album with Purple, but overall it's a good album.
This is how I rank the Morse album.
1. Purpendicular
2. Bananas
3. Rapture of the Deep
4. Now What?!
5. Abandon
I really like "Body Line" it's catchy, I forgot how many times I listen to it. "Uncommon Man" is also good, reminds me of Keith Emerson.

One of the things I love the most about it is that Gillan somehow channels the IGB/Gillan band vibe again in his vocals/melody lines. Cannot praise that highly enough since I love that era.

Am I counting Gillan's vocal range right when comparing the start of Blood from a stone and the last scream of Vincent price, getting 2 notes less than 4 octaves? from low A to high F.
Not bad for a 67 year old, eh?

Practically, every song has a great potential. I can see no difference in quality between classic songs from the 70's and Out of Hand, Blood from the Stone or Vincent Price. And the fact that the style is different and that they are not exact copies of old hits should not be used as an argument here.
Somebody wrote that after positivie reviews people will start complaining. Of course they will. But this time the record has the quality do defends itself. And it will defend itself as it has very few or practically no weaknesses, unlike previous albums.
And the reception of the album both in music press and among fans proves that.

Hmmm ?? the thing is the new album is good and a lot better than the godawful ROTD but it isnt by any stretch of the imagination anywhere even close to the 70s albums or indeed the reunion albums .Its a better than decent offering from an ageing rock band.Gillan does a great job with whats left of his voice. Airey does some sterling work too but I personally can do without the DP sounding like ELP (theres already an ELP to listen to if I want to and I dont ).Paicey is recognizable but still plays drumming by numbers there's no inspiration there for me.SM plays very well on the album but THAT solo is still present the good thing about Steves contributions this time is that they are somewhat understated its more a Keyboard album than a guitar oriented album.Its a fine album one which I will listen to a lot im sure but lets not make it something it clearly isnt ie a CLASSIC!! its NOT!!There is NOTHING on this album we haven't all heard before maybe not from DP but certainly from others

For me Now What is better than PS or HoBL. These records contributed few fresh ideas to the reportoire that had already existed at that time. They were collections of great rockers, great songs, but did not push the band into new direction, or if they did, it turned out to be far from being the most fortunate one (see some of the songs on House of Blue Light or the whole Slaves and Masters).
Now What is a combination of what we know, but also of things that are new to Deep Purple and introduce new quality. It's the most experimental record since Fireball with probably the most interesting arrangements I have heard on a record by DP.
Moreover, on Now What DP have managed to capture the spirit and the sound of the 70's (it will suffice to listen to the Hammond in the Blood from the Stone) but at the same time introduce some fresh ideas. This is something that reunion albums did not offer to me.
I guess people will continue idealizing Blackmore albums forever, but I don't care as I do know when I have a classic album on my hands. Or quality album, as classic probably involves some kind of recognition and popularity. But when it comes to the quality, I see more of it in Now What than on reunion albums. Was the drumming on PS more inspiring than it is today? Really? Were the arrangements, keyboard solos and the songs really that much better than on this album? I don't think so.
This record IS NOT another ROTD or another Purpendicular. This is a completely different quality - IMHO.

Thank you DP for releasing the best album since Come Taste the Band. I'd given up on you guys since long but with this album I'm proud to be a DP fan again. What a good start 2013 is. First this fantastic album and in June we'll have Sabbath's "13".

DP built their name on top quality hard rock with the AWESOME virtuosity of Blackmore Lord and Paice and the wonderful vocal talents of Ian Gillan.This current lineup
are nowhere close to that quality IMHO
