Rock Goes to College 1981
As a beginner Gillanist I've been trying to find old records and videos here and there and I happened to stumble over this TV show (about 30 minutes) shot live in Scotland in 1981. The video quality is not great (clearly damaged by the time, too many bright lights and you can see Ian's hair more than his face) but the sound is not bad. Great voice as usual (I adore Mutually Assured Destruction), sadly no Mr. Universe (one of my faves). Now I wonder if anybody knows if the gig at Reading Festival 1979 has ever been shot and is traceable anywhere. I would like to see the very early days of Gillan (to me the best band Ian has ever had after Deep Purple).

Re: Rock Goes to College 1981
Two shows were broadcast on UK TV in 1981.
I guess you're referring to the Scottish TV recording of the show at the Edinburgh Gateway Theatre on 5th Feb 1981, which was broadcast as part of the "In Concert" series?
The show that was broadcast as part of the BBC's "Rock Goes to College" series was from Oxford Polytechnic on 18th February.

Re: Rock Goes to College 1981
I guess the performance you think of is this:
Rock Goes To College, Oxford Polytechnic 18/02/81
Tracklist is:
Unchain Your Brain
Mr Universe
No Easy Way
Trouble
MAD
On The Rocks
Vengeance
New Orleans
But as skyscaper has pointed out from your description it seems you have:
Gateway Theatre, Edinburgh 05/02/81
Tracklist for this:
Unchain Your Brain
Trouble
If You Believe Me
MAD
No Easy Way
The latter is far shorter and more TV studio like while the other one has everything a proper concert should have(except that the set isn´t quite a complete one).

And I don´t know anything about the Reading Show of 79(or any of the following ones 1980,1981 etc) being filmed. I don´t think they exist as films.

Re: Rock Goes to College 1981
I agree with Milan, i don't think there is any footage from reading and i bet that the
promotors / managers / record company's / money men / band members and most of fans
regret this. Think of the bands that played the festival circuit in the 70's and 80's,
when Donnington was correctly named, and Reading ruled. If only someone would have
had the foresight to have put all of this onto tape, what a little gem they would now
have in their hands. Of course the regional tv stations did film some footage for their
local news programmes and the like. I wonder if the likes of the BBC have little
gems hidden away in back rooms and draws. A question for our intrepid BBC reporter i think.

Yes, the full footage of Rainbow's 1980 Donington performance!
