a) A near completel subjective opinion - but one you're certainly entitled to.
But let's not overlook the fact that over the last 15 years or so, both Hughes + Turner have released thier share of 'covers' + re-recordings - both of thier own and other's compositions...both studio + live versions in some cases. This instance is only different in the fact that Gillan is doing his at present, and the other two guys you cited have done thier similarly motivated works in the past. So, no harm - no foul in either case as far as I'm concerned.

b) I don't think so. But if that's the way you and anyone else feels, simply don't buy the product when it's released. Perhaps Gillan is doing this record purely as a sort of 'cash in'...I say, "So what? I don't have to let him have any of my cash if I don't want him to have any."

Not exactly. I may be mistaken about Glenn's rerecordings (*it's pretty easy to get lost in his discography) , but Joe only re-did Street of Dreams (and I wasn't very pleased about it) on Undercover, otherwise brilliant cover album of other people's work and also sang on Drinkin' with the devil from a japanese Rainbow tribute. Anyway, the guy makes 2 or 3 awesome records of new material each year (just as Glenn) while IG gave us one CD of new stuff in 5 years 2 almost years ago and spends time in endless greatest hits tours. That was my point. Clearly different Purple family members have different level of creative juices flowing.

Re: IAN GILLAN MAKES ME SICK...

Nearly every album that Glenn and Joe made in this century are cool to listen 2 or 3 times, but they hardly stay in the CD player !i sold every HTP album i had because they became boring to listen to ! they are not bad, but they haven´t got the flame, IMHO they are good and ok albums and because of the excelent production work and technical skills of all musicians impress at first listens ! but after a while we´ve got nothing left ! those aren´t albums that will be "THE albums" in a few years or so ! IMO the best thing made by one of those 2 was Joe´s Mother´s Army ! that was cool rock´n´roll, and more dirty and raw than the HTP things that bore me after a while , with all it´s "polished perfection" (meaning "boring") lol emoticon still don´t flame me emoticon it´s just my opinion emoticon Also you have to remeber that the Ian Gillan solo career is not very well known, so i guess doing a retrospective album like that instead of a normal Best Of album, is original and cool emoticon i bet that some people are gonna like more of the new versions , it happens when one listens to a new version before the original version ! emoticon It´s cool and it sounds more like something fun to do than anything emoticon As for the versions , well what´s wrong with SOTW anyway ? i know it´s overplayed but it´s a fantastic song and while die hards purple family fans may not like it, general people who are into rock music but doesen´t keep up with things would expect it ! i bet that more people would want Smoke on the Water than Flight of the Rat or an obscure B-side emoticon
A man with his age that can keep his level work and activity hardly makes me sick ! He has my respect instead no matter some dodgy moves he might have done in his career emoticon

Rock On

João

P.S. - agree with mike, i am always thrilled when Purple Family news show up emoticon Rock On

To me, it makes sense to look back at material you've done when you're doing a cd to go along with a documentary looking back at what you've done.

I can't believe Gillan smokes ciggarettes....black death to singing....no wonder he sounds bad at times....but even more remarkable is how good he can sound. He was great in SF one year ago.

So, I have to say, yes, exactly. emoticon If one track is Turner's 'share', then one track it is.
Seriously, though, I know there was more than one Rainbow track on the live album HTP recorded in Japan - for example - and I was referring to the various 'tribute' albums Turner's been an artist on through the years, along with the live stuff.
After re-reading what I posted, I have to allow that perhaps the term 'released' caused a bit of confusion. I wasn't intending to limit what I was saying to strictly JLT solo releases, or Glenn Hughes solo releases (which they'd - I'd imagine - have more control over) than a tribute album that they would be - basically - 'hired hands' for. I meant any release either was involved in, in any way over the last 20 years or so.

I don't get this at all. Unbelievable. Totally pointless IMO, but of course he has the right to do it.

I find the prospect of a book by him far more interesting.

Sure there's Rainbow tracks on HTP live album and there's nothing wrong with that. Joe's not touring endlessly like Purple and, in fact catching him, Hughes of Bonnet live is a huge luck so this material id not overplayed at all. And HTP is one of 3 official live albums of Joe's entire career (the other 2 are YM's Trial by Fire and Brazen Abbot's lates) - compare that to what Gillan is doing. I don't mind him doing old stuff, just not the same songs everytime.
