Sabbath Purple Sabbath
I dunno if this has been discussed before (if it has please direct me to the thread and lock this) but what do you guys think of Gillian's brief spot as vocalist for Black Sabbath? I think Born Again is probably my favourite non-Ozzy Sabbath album - brilliant songs, terrible murky raw production and frankly truth be told the BEST Ian Gillian vocal performance I've ever heard - just Disturbing the Priest and the title track are evidence enough. I haven't heard Gillian's solo albums except for Dream catcher but I'd really like to know your thoughts on Born Again and whether you'd have liked Gillian to continue. I know for a fact that I would have.

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
I think it's excellent. I captures Gillans voice just before it kinda completely fails for a while ie when he had all the problems in reunion purple. Some of the Born Again tour bootlegs show how bad he was suffering but as you say the album is so raw and powerful with obviously lots of effort gone in on Ians part.

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
Love the album (the re-master is much better than the original btw). Gillan's voice was in top form.
Anyway, here is the other thread on this topic (post to this thread to bring it back to the top for more discussion if you like):
Born Again
And another thread that may be of interest:

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
In my opinion it featured one of THE finest vocal performances of any rock singer in history.
It just goes to show that if you are inspired enough, you can pull off a great thing such as this.
Gillan was definitly inspired,by what?I'm not exactly sure...

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
Gillan was inspired with help from Tony Iommi with the lyrics, and probably with the menacing looks of Don Arden... (did he threaten to have Gillan inteviewed for Sharon's future talk show?)

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
Tony didn't write any lyrics for BA,it was Gillan and Butler, the Gillan parts are easily identifiable, especially the ones where he hacked his own previous lyrics.

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
...well the whiskey must have steadied his brain well enough to be inspired enough to pull off the masterful performance.

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
Hi to all!!!
I am a real Purple and Sabbath freak! Got just about everything guys ever released....
As far as BORN AGAIN - Just a few good songs. The sound was bad, but the record sleeve was definitely awful!!! Gillan's voice was good on the album, but bad on the subsequent tour. One of my least favorite Sabbath albums...

Re: Sabbath Purple Sabbath
I saw them at Reading,to call what I saw "bad" is the funniest thing I've ever heard.
Not to mention the many bootlegs I have, including the video from Montreal Canada, which is a fine performance, just not filmed all that well.
